Synopsis Prospero, Duke of Milan, his dukedom usurped by his brother Antonio, is put to sea with his daughter Miranda and some magical books smuggled in by his loyal councillor Gonzalo. The sea casts them up on an island where Prospero, exercising his magical powers, makes a home for himself and Miranda. One day a great storm, which Prospero has conjured, breaks up a passing ship and delivers to him the members of his usurping court. Treacherous brother, fellow conspirators and old friend alike come under Prospero's spell. Shakespeare's last play. Crucible
One of the great attractions of this production is seeing Derek Jacobi perfectly placed on stage, with Daniel Evans as a fantastic Ariel by his side. The spirits also deserve a mention, with a fine 'Shared Experience' moment - chasing Trinculo, Caliban and his drunken master, Stephano away. Very engaging. One of the best productions of The Tempest I've seen. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

It is true that, Derek Jacobi apart, performances are serviceable rather than outstanding, but this is a fine ensemble production, with the groups of players (e.g. the trio of comic villains) much stronger than the single characterisations. Michael Grandage also reminds us of the often-neglected virtues of skilful story-telling. This is a wonderfully spare, economical production of a play that can easily appeal to a director's self-indulgent streak. - USER: Whatsonstage.com
