Synopsis This Is Our Youth is set in New York in 1982, the decade of ‘money fever . The play depicts forty-eight hours in the lives of three rich middle class teenagers who have $15,000 stolen dollars to blow on a hedonistic spending spree. It is Kenneth Lonergan s first play, written in 1996 and nominated for a Drama Desk Best Play Award. He was nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for his 2001 film You Can Count on Me, which he wrote and directed. His other work includes Lobby Hero, which features in the forthcoming Donmar season of new American writing.
Enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. Acting was excellent. Have read the play which wasn't that stunning but it came to life on stage.Definitely recommended if you can get tickets. Word of warning fairly strong language which obviously suprised the couple sat in front of us who had two small children with them! - USER: Whatsonstage.com

The cast is great...except I honestly felt that Matt Damon was much better overall than Casey Affleck. The story is quite close to my heart since I fall into the catagory each one of those characters did. Truthfully, it scared me b/c I kept thinking back to those days and the people I knew then. All in all, the show was really well done. Hearing the Tube go by was a problem, as was getting in and out of the theatre...but it was worth it.

I loved it. The cast were brilliant - warm and familiar, knowingly dysfunctional in a very socially common way. I did find it initially quite difficult to seperate Matt Damon's character Dennis from that of Will in Good Will Hunting - similar sharp mental agility, restrained aggression and arrogance - but he came into his own as the attention moved from him to Casey Affleck. He was fantastic - such an instantly likeable character who is hugely irritating, very funny, very fresh, and has a child like innocence which belies the druggy lifestyle he has decided upon. Summer Phoenix was extremely good at interrupting and long awkward silences - and the kissing was beautifully awful [I hope it was supposed to be... !] I thoroughly enjoyed the play and would recommend it to anyone. Quick advice – Invest in the binoculars for the second half – well worth it for the some fine leg-work from Damon – lovely. Jen - USER: Whatsonstage.com

I've seen Mr.Matt Damon and the new cast and they are wonderful to watch. Each is unique in their roles and have strong stage life but, we must pity the play as there in nothing there. Hints of family abuse and some actual onstage tussles but, where to they lead? Nowhere. But if you want ot see good acting please go but don't sit in the back of the house -- most of the seats are obstructed view. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Great play, Great cast. There is much to praise in this production, but the high point was Jake Gyllenhaal. He had the audience with him the whole way, the cries of anguish at some of his antics were a true measure of his abilities. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

I am a big theatre goer and have worked in the industry for a while and this is the most refreshing production i have seen in a very long time. The cast are brilliant and Jake's stage presence is amazing especially when you realise it is his first time! I really reccommend it, its funny, witty, sad and really entertaining! - USER: Whatsonstage.com

The acting from the three leads is far better than the play itself. It is an empty play about empty people. I also saw the off- Broadway production several years ago which was noteworthy because it made a star of Mark Ruffalo,(he played Warren the part Jake Gyllenhaal plays in this production) whose exceptional performance raised the level of the play. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

I agree completely with your reviewer. This is a very good production indeed in which there are 3 superb performances. It is a shame that the night that I saw it there was a very small audience. London theatregoers should be eager to see acting and drama of this high quality. - USER: Whatsonstage.com
