Synopsis Based on the true facts of Vincent van Gogh's early life in London and about the transforming effects of love, sex and artistic adventure on unformed talent, and traces the birth of genius. Brixton, 1873. A brash young Dutchman, working for the London branch of an international firm of art-dealers, rents a room in the house of an English widow. Three years later, he returns to Europe on the first step of a journey which will end in breakdown, death and immortality.
A gem of a play, and I was delighted to read that it was returning to the West End. The acting is wonderful. As Clare Higgins says, a lot happens in the silences. It's a great cast, and I love the comic relief supplied by Emma Handy as Vincent's blunt, cleaning-obsessed sister, but I miss Paul Nicholls as lodger, Sam. The night, undoubtedly, belongs to Clare Higgins, who must be one of the best actresses on the London stage at the moment. Andrew B - USER: Whatsonstage.com (193.130.127.205)

One of the great evenings of 2002 is back! A fascinating play, staged to perfection by god himself (Sir Richard Eyre) with towering performances from Clare Higgins (previously Britain's most underrated actress) and the Dutchman whose name escapes me (sorry!). A gem !
