 | I saw it at the Gate and was very disappointed. It is boring consisting of the one visual joke throughout the performance. It seemed to go on forever and was I relieved when it finished. The ending also didn't come as too much of a surprise as it seemed to be the only one it could have been. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (82.35.56.7) | 01 Jul 03 |
  | This play by Giuseppe Manfridi at the Pit is only 65 minutes but it should have been more like a scene of 40 minutes. The premise seems funny enough (if unbelievable); a young man having anal sex with an older woman gets his penis stuck, leaving them in a very compromising and uncomfortable (for long periods anyway) position. The man’s gynaecologist father comes to rescue his son with not much luck, meanwhile the son is having unwanted and multiple ‘moments of pleasure’. Might sounds rude, but it is actually very tame and suitable for all but prudes and the kids.
Naturally revelations are made, the father and woman know each other from youth and many conceits are revealed, its’ actually very well done with a clear but funny twist that I won’t reveal. Some of the early dialogue is slightly tedious and does not totally hold the audience; the writer could have got his laughs (and black comedy) slightly more briskly (and I don’t usually say that about a hour long play).
It’s nicely Directed by Peter Hall (in an apt set) in a very English way, with a few line and name changes this could have been written by an Englishman in Putney not an Italian wherever. The young man is played well by the surprisingly good looking Mark Rice-Oxley (last seen in The Dwarfs); his orgasmic face is a picture. The older woman Beatrice is played by Jessica Hunter with her wonderful voice and face much of the time hidden in a parachute, and the father is perfectly played by David Yelland, a joy as ever.
The whole thing ends in sickening tragedy, and makes you slightly uneasy. A play of unfulfilled comic potential, it should have been better anyway. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (82.35.56.7) | 27 Jun 03 |
