Synopsis Based on the 1967 film starring Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing, the nostalgic musical comedy is set in 1920s New York where recent arrival-from-Kansas Millie Dillmount is determined to bob her hair, dance to jazz, get a job and marry her boss - all in the modern fashion.
Just as the title character of Thoroughly Modern Millie arrives in New York and discovers, like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, that she's not in Kansas anymore, so Amanda Holden has arrived on the London stage to play the eponymous Millie and prove that she herself is not just a tabloid headline but also a headliner of real star quality.
Holden's the heart and the art of an all-guns-blazing Broadway blast of a show that has transferred here far quicker than any New York musical has for some time - where's The Producers, anyone? - just 18 months after it premiered there and swept its way to six Tony Awards.
Although it's based on a familiar movie musical, as with the stage version of Fame only the title song (by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn) survives from the original score. The rest has mostly been freshly re-constructed to pastiche period new songs by Jeanine Tesori (music) and Dick Scanlan (lyrics), wrapped within an entertainingly convoluted book by Richard Morris (who wrote the screenplay to the 1967 film) and Scanlan.
While the screen original was a throwback to a previous Julie Andrews flapper-age stage vehicle The Boyfriend (one that Andrews never got to do in the belated and disastrous film version), this new stage adaptation of Millie is likewise a throwback to an old-fashioned style of musical comedy.
But it's no criticism to say that it's a brand-new show that looks like a very old one. Indeed, that's high praise, proving that its creators have properly assimilated and appropriated the genre with as much skill as obvious affection. They've even not fought shy of the racial stereotyping of period shows, providing a delicious comic turn for Maureen Lipman who, disguised as a Chinese immigrant, runs the Hotel Priscilla boarding house for young actresses in Manhattan, from where she despatches orphan arrivals into a white slavery ring.
It is into this swirling melee of intrigue and romance that young Millie Dillmount (Holden) arrives in 1922 New York from small town America, and in short order, finds herself losing her purse, her shoe and soon her heart to the man to whom she appeals for help, Jimmy Smith (played by Mark McGee, last seen as Marilyn in the Boy George musical Taboo, who changes gear and gender identity to become a wonderfully fresh-faced juvenile lead).
While Holden gives it her all, and then some, in a performance that appealingly combines knowingness with innocence, she also has an attractive singing voice and a loose-limbed vitality as a dancer - she's more than capable of holding her own against the mass-ranked chorus in Rob Ashford's spectacular flapper choreography.
With Craig Urbani also providing another of his finely chiselled comic romantic turns as Millie's boss, and Sheila Ferguson giving some heft (and breast) as a nightclub singer belatedly shoe-horned into the plot at the end of the first act, Michael Mayer's expertly executed production is a crowd-pleasing winner.
I am giving this show 3 stars only because of Sheila Ferguson -
AND yes, she gets all three!!! I saw her performance the opening week at The Shaftsbury Theatre and again just before it closed on June 26th, 2003. What strides Sheila had made. Sheila's voice, stage presence and comedic sense of timing is parallel to none. She is finding a depth to her acting with each part she undertakes, and I think some of you are being extremely cruel regarding her!
This woman dares to be different and to try new things. Why do we always diss people like 'Sheila Ferguson'? Whenever Sheila takes any stage, it lights up and other's simply pale in her signigicance, as she really is larger than life. How would Whitney Houston have fared in 'The Bodyguard' had she not been protected and surrounded by Kevin Costner to hold up a meek and mediocre preformance? Same thing applies to Denzel's holding her up in 'The Preacher's Wife'. And, would any Diva put their career on the line like Sheila? I think not!
And speaking of Amanda Holden? Geessssss, what a wooden performance she gave!!! No stage presense whatsoever!!! You've also mentioned Maureen Lipman and her singing??? DUH!!!! Anita Dobson and her singing??? DUH AGAIN!!! Is that what you call singing? How can you possibly compare the voices of Amanda Holden, Maureen Lipman and Anita Dobson with that of Sheila Ferguson's??? I don't get it? Sheila is brilliant!!!
Why can't we give the woman her due, here in this country? Sheila Ferguson is an 'INTERNSATIONAL STAR', not a local yocal. I respect her for even daring to stretch herself to be different!!!
Sheila Ferguson is a truly great, daring and innovative 'Diva'. And it's about time people stopped expecting the worst and givng her the 'Party Line'. Sheila Ferguson CAN act and watch out for her, she'll prove you all wrong one day.
I can't wait to see her starring as 'The Fairy Godmother' in Cinderella. My mates and I will be there, in Canterbury, to see and support this amazing lady in her first Panto venture. Ali and the boys. - 82.71.40.61)

I saw Donna Steele in the lead role on the 8th of May and although she was fantastic I would still like to see Amanda perform it! The show comprises delightful costumes, scintillating tapdancing and lots of humour. The muscical score is highly commendable and I challenge anyone to try learning the words to "The speed test" without having fun... - USER: Whatsonstage.com (130.88.214.164)

Outstanding!! The best show currently in the west end. Amanda Holden is faultless in the leading role and deserves to go onto bigger and better roles when her run has finished. Has an outstanding voice hitting all the notes and her dancing is amazing, she is fantastic. Sheila Ferguson puts in another great performance as does the fantastic Mark McGee as Jimmy. The ensemble are one of the strongest ever seen and put their all into what is a very demanding show! However, it is Anita Dobson who made the show for me as the wonderful Mrs Meers she is absolutly hilarious and had me crying with her comdey an outstanding performance and a great singing voice. Set and orchestra were great as was everything about this amazing show. If you haven't seen it go before Amanda and anita leave you won't regret it! A great old fashioned musical that makes you leave with a smile that isn't trying to be clever in the slightest. Outstanding! Well Done to everyone for a fantastic night at the theatre!! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (217.137.94.101)

I am soooo glad i decided to see this amazing show. I knew that Amanda Holden was going to be good but i didn't know just how good. She carries the show off on her own and totally nails the last note of Gimme Gimme. The whole cast were totally amazing, Sheila Ferguson (sp?) was very very good as Muzzy and Anita Dobson was very good and very funny as Mrs Meers! very worth seeing! Amanda Holden steels the show and is one of the best performers i have ever seen! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.92.67.74)

I resisted seeing this musical but finally I gave in and what a fool I was to have done so. On the night I went the understudy Donna Steele was on for Amanda Holden and she was absolutely the Millie I hoped she would be, and it was also Anita Dobson's 1st performance as Mrs Meers and she was truly knockout. The overture sets the pace of a show that aims to entertain and boy does it deliver - it was definately robbed at Award time! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (212.44.42.82)

I wasn't particular interested in going, mainly because I do not rate Amanda Holden, but I was willing to give her a chance. Fortunately though, Donna Steele was performing the title role and she was truly magical! Her accent, acting, singing, dancing and general stage prescence was awesome and I think they should ditch Amanda and keep this little starlet on full-time.
Oh and the storlyine and many other actors were great too. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (12.39.71.54)

I saw this show in NY and was greatly impressed. I love good old fashioned Broadway shows with lots of chorus, great choreography. The transfer to the West End has been more than successful, and being at last Monday nights show(Anita Dobson's first night as Mrs. Meers) This show has gone from being "greatly impressed" to Sensational! A great, lets be entertained show. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (80.42.32.92)

I am a boy of 12 and the performance of Maureen Lipman outstanded me and as Amanda Holdenn was in hospital with a poisoned kidney Donna steele outstaged most of the cast so watch that space. Now maureen lipman, an outstanding actress an beautifull singer and quite a good comidienne, what an interesting woman. My first Time to see this show and i would definatley see this show at any price and not only great scenery but what a crispy story. sadly maureen is leaving and Anita dobson is taking over as Mrs meers, a 5 star extravaganza - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.93.34.14)

I was dreading seeing this as Holden wasn't in it when I went. But thankk god- as I saw a delightful performance from Donna Steele. This is a great delightfully old fashioned musical with really sparkling performances and plenty of laughs. I really enjoyed it despite thinking I would hate it. Worth the admission price for the tap dancing/typewriter scenes alone.
