Synopsis The Deranged Marriage (provides a fresh look at the Asian marriage system with a uniquely British twist. The show welcomes the audience as wedding guests to take their part in the fun, tears, drama and chaos commonly associated with the 'Big Day'. Rishi and Sona have just met, now they're getting married and although this was their decision, the whirlwind wedding circus is on the move without them. While their frenzied families race to ensure this is the most elaborate wedding Slough has ever seen, the young couple's cold feet threaten to enter the wedding mandap; and while the missing ladoos continue to cause mayhem, years of family conflict bubbling under the surface look likely to spill over. In the midst of the glittering jewels and spectacular saris, crooning aunties and drunken uncles, is the reason behind it all being lost? Running time: 2 x 60 mins plus interval. Age 5+ Studio 2
As a Swiss of Indian origin, no theatre weekend in London should be complete without plans to see an 'Indian show'. The title was enticing. I expected a complete farce based on the 'arranged marriage' theme. What I got was a watered down play that did not live up to my expectations - especially in the light of some of the 'Indian' productions I've seen on BBC (goodness gracious me for eg). The first Act was weak, in my opinion - too much build up time! The second Act had many more farcical aspects and helped me decide to give the show a 3 rating. The set was creative, lighting changes good - reflected the mood chages nicely. I'm not sure who the play was actually wrtten for? British audiences that aren't familiar with the arranged marriage rituals or Indians familiar with them? Should it have been the former then it may have worked had there been a British audience - on the night I was there, over 80% appeared to be of Indian origin! The audience seemed to love the show, and I may be overcritical, and I may have set my expectations too high, but overall I would not recommend this show to anyone who didn't have all the time in the world to see all the other fantastic shows on in London. - 83.77.220.210)
