Synopsis One late summer afternoon, a successful middle-aged man sits peacefully with his wife on the verandah of their summer house. Somewhere below them, their grandchildren are playing on the beach. Half an hour later, all communication with the outside world has been cut off, and the house is swarming with secret police and heavily armed officers. For the man is Mikhail Gorbachev, President of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and the date is August 18 1991. Penny Gold's gripping and deeply moving play takes place at a pivotal moment of world history. Part political thriller and part personal drama, The President's Holiday draws on the diaries of Raisa Gorbacheva to tell the story of a family under siege and an idealist who unwittingly destroys everything for which he has fought.
I agree with the previous comments, however that young girl Skye Stuart was an absolutely wonderful actress, she had great potential. I, as a talent scout will definitely be looking out for her in the future! - Margeret Smith

I agree with the previous review but only up to a point - I don't see any brilliant potential in it at all. Interestingly, the writer has significant experience with radio drama and maybe it could be reworked as such, but never the less as it stands it is terribly wooden, a fact that gave the usually wonderfull Julian Glover a real handicap from the very start. Isla Blair struggled on valiantly doing the best she could too with this altogether turgid script. How on earth it got to be staged and by Hampstead Theatre boggles the mind! The staging was interesting but ultimately it cramped the actors style. Substantial rewriting would need to be carried out before anyone should consider letting this work see the light of day again. - rds
