Synopsis
Set in post-war Paris in 1945, this musical fable of Good versus Evil is a tale for our times, with only a madwoman and her odd collection of acquaintances to save the city from corporate greed.

One can only applaud the bravado in bringing this forgotten musical curiosity to London audiences for its UK premiere. It opened on Broadway 44 years ago and bombed. Composer and lyricist Jerry Herman and his book writers Jerome Lawrence and Robert E Lee felt that the charming chamber entertainment they had envisaged had been blown out of proportion to conform to the musical style of blockbusters like Hello Dolly and Mame.
Based on an adaptation of Jean Giraudoux's play The Madwoman of Chaillot it is now probably much closer to what was originally intended, but those 44 years have taken their toll. What is one to make now of a whimsical Parisian fable where corporate greed and a contaminated world are set to rights by a fantasy trial where a Sewerman inexplicably stands in to make the case of the villains, who are then 'evaporated' into a mysterious underground world which is reached, conveniently, via a secret manhole in the heroine's living roo...

Bizarre, barmy plot but staged wonderfully with some excellent performances not least from the fabulous Betty Buckley. What a treat...
