Synopsis
Blind since shortly after birth, Molly lives a fulfilled life, with a good job and a wide circle of friends. Then Frank Sweeney enters her world...Frank - passionate, impulsive and reckless - takes Molly as his wife and convinces her that she should seek medical treatment to have her sight restored. Their hopes rest in the hands of a once-successful surgeon, now exiled in rural Ireland. But as he seeks to work his miracle, it quickly becomes apparent to Molly that the world she sees before her is very different from the one she had perceived in her mind's eye. From a life of darkness, she finds herself dazzled by the harsh glare of reality, where new-found passion leads to torn loyalties and heartbreak.

Brian Friel’s Molly Sweeney explores the world of a woman, blind since childhood, who undergoes an operation to restore her sight. On the surface it’s a simple premise, and the style of three intersecting monologues is simpler still, but the content raises challenges, questions and issues which reach far further.
Molly (Dorothy Duffy) is in her late thirties: confident, independent, optimistic. She appreciates beauty without sight, even occasionally pitying sighted people for their inability to experience the total immersion and abandonment she often enjoys. It’s a fascinating insight and turns many preconceptions about living with blindness upside down.
