The Show:
SWEET CHARITY follows the misadventures of love encountered by the gullible and guileless Charity Hope Valentine, a woman who always gives her heart and her dreams to the wrong man. The Tony Award-winning musical – which has music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and a book by Neil Simon - features show-stopping numbers including “Hey, Big Spender”, “If My Friends Could See Me Now” and “The Rhythm of Life”.
Originally directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, SWEET CHARITY premiered on Broadway in 1966, where it ran for over 600 performances. Charity was originally played by Gwen Verdon on Broadway, Juliet Prowse in the West End (in 1967) and was immortalised in the 1969 film version by Shirley MacLaine.
Having appeared in Carousel, Oliver! and Grease early in her career, Tamzin Outhwaite now returns to the musical stage to tackle the role of Charity. Well known for EastEnders and myriad TV roles, Outhwaite’s other theatre work includes Breathing Corpses and Flesh Wound at the Royal Court and, Boeing Boeing in the West End.
The SWEET CHARITY cast also features Josefina Gabrielle, Mark Umbers, Tiffany Graves, Paul J Medford and Ebony Molina. The production is directed by Matthew White and choreographed by multiple Olivier Award winner Stephen Mear.
The Chocolate Factory’s last four Christmas musical revivals have all transferred to the West End: the five-time Olivier Award-winning Sunday in the Park with George, Little Shop of Horrors (also directed by Matthew White), La Cage aux Folles (still running at the Playhouse Theatre) and last Christmas’ A Little Night Music.
