The judging panel continue to be impressed with Sheffield’s creative output. A member of the judging panel said: “Factor in the production of a new musical – This is My Family featuring Siân Phillips – a tour of The Full Monty with confirmation of a 16-week West End transfer next year, and a successful run of My Fair Lady starring Dominic West, and it’s not surprising that The Stage’s 2013 regional venue of the year, Sheffield Theatres, is in the running again. A major production of Oliver! directed by artistic director Daniel Evans for the Christmas period and its ongoing community-led work through shows performed by its Sheffield People’s Theatre provide the icing on the cake.”

Chief executive Dan Bates said of the achievement: “We were so proud to hold the title of Regional Theatre of the Year 2013 and are thrilled to be shortlisted for the award for a second time. We have had an exceptional year with five world premieres on our stages; The Full Monty enjoyed a sell-out run at the Lyceum before its tour of the UK; Bull, a new play by Mike Bartlett, transferred to New York as part of the Brits Off Broadway season; we won four awards at the UK Theatre Awards and our hit production of Oliver! will continue to delight audiences through to the end of January. All of this success is only possible thanks to the hard work of the Sheffield Theatres team and the passionate support of our audiences.”

If such an accolade were not enough, the theatre also celebrates success with Bates and Evans appearing at number 11 in the Stage 100 ‘Power List’ moving from number 18 last year.

The successful nominees for the Regional Theatre of the Year will be announced at an event in London on 31 January 2014. Watch this space…
