starAnother typically pedestrian review from Morely-Priestman. As usual she completely misses out on the deeper meaning of the director's intent with this piece and thinks that by throwing out a few academic words she can hoodwink her readers into thinking that she actually knows what she's talking about. Morely-Priestman may not think theatre audiences are stupid but her blatantly patronising tone and pretentious airs of superiority certainly indicate she thinks those who read her reviews are stupid. Do not let this review put you off going to see an absolutely wonderful and exhilirating piece of theatre. We live in a period of global political upheaval in which the cynics might argue we could see another wave of 'September Massacres' all over the globe. Blumenau's interpretation of Inchbald's wonderful words do not 'ram' the modern relevance down our throats but simply remove the piece from the restrictive confines of the French Revolution (a very particular period of violence) and allow it to become deliberately ambiguous in its meaning. No longer is it a powerful discourse on Jacobinistic politics, both pros and cons, but an even more powerful discourse on the sorry state of humanity today and throughout all history. Come on WhatsonStage, what happened to your competent reviewers? Morely-Priestman has been subjecting us to her banal and inaccurate nonsense for quite some time now and I think it's time she was put out to pasture. - Daniel Stanton24 Jun 09
