starstarstarstarThis was a somewhat harrowing experience, but an opera I’m very glad I did experience. It moves between an ocean liner in the 60’s, whose passengers include a former Auschwitz guard and one of her victims, and Auschwitz itself back in the 40’s. It’s a very dramatic but very accessible score and David Pountney’s production is masterly, partly thanks to Johan Engels extraordinary design, with the ship’s deck towering over the rail tracks and desolation of the concentration camp. Richard Armstrong’s conducting was also masterly and the orchestra sounded sensational. Amongst a fine ensemble, Giselle Allen as Marta and Michelle Breedt as Liese were wonderful. - Gareth James16 Oct 11
starstarstarstarstarMy first opera in English and in the UK -I thought it was brilliant -stunning set and great atmosphere. But thank god for the surtitles as the sopranos sing so high that words are totally lost in the high pitch shrieks of this range. - Dave J25 Sep 11
starstarstarstarI'd say this is a fair review. I went to see the piece last night. The action takes place on board an ocean liner, and at Auchwitz. The liner sections are genuinely gripping, though the sections in the concentration camp are a bit flabby. You could cut a good 15 minutes from the concentration camp scenes in act one, and lose ten minutes in act two, and not notice they were gone. Ditto the pointless epilogue. If the work finished 7 or 8 minutes before it did, this would have been a five star opera. As it was, one of the finest stagings I think I've seen at ENO and the singing was faultless. My only slight gripe, other than the piece needing cuts, was the balance of the orchestra. I sat in stalls seat N 14, almost dead centre of the row, and there were times when the percussion on the audience right all but drowned out the singers, especially the (snare?) drum being played with brushes. Minor point though in a score than reminded me at times of Peter Grimes. Well done ENO for bringing it to us. I'm sure that if it's done elsewhere someone will have the balls to wield the blue pencil and turn this score into a modern classic. - Richard Voyce25 Sep 11
