starstarstarstarstarI can't believe that whoever posted the review below was so vitriolic about this production, and indeed this play! It is an interesting and intellectually challenging piece and an outstanding example of fringe theatre and what fringe theatre is there for. Ok, so a play like this would never make it to the West End as it isn't easy on the ears or on the brain (although don't get me wrong - some of the songs are just beautiful to listen to) but I found it to be an extremely enjoyable experience nonetheless. As for the production itself, there really isn't much I can fault it for. Direction, performances and all design aspects were far and above many many fringe shows that I have seen. And it was GREAT to see an accomplished, older, pretty much all-female cast. Plays with strong female parts are still in too short a supply, and that alone almost makes putting on this play worthwhile. I won't go on, but suffice to say I certainly agree more with the review above than below, and don't let one person's opinion put you off going to see something a little bit different from your average musical, that I think will challenge and entertain in equal measure. - L12 Oct 09
starHorrific. There is a reason why not all American musicals make it over to us. This would be because this one is a stinker. It's essentaily not a musical, but a contemporary opera in a jazzy style..... But it makes NO sence why it's an opera and not a play (it is in fact what i'd call a 'pork chop' opera... where the singers sing things like 'Whats for dinner dahling.... it's Pork CHOOOOOOOps'.. in an atonal style).. the idea that the 'First ladies' have something else to say is ok, but it's nothing great.. The show is too wordy and the direction to immature to grasp it properly.. thats not to say that it won't be in the future, just not at this time. The performnaces are competent (Machin is outstanding), but unfortunatly the shows absoultly B******S. M J LaChusia is known for his jazzy stuff (Wild Party and Hello again are good expamples) but this is trite.. I was put off by the set (too much noise as people were walking on it in high heals) and everyone sat down for AGES!!! Actualy this would be better re-named as 'Pre-menstural sitting down: the muscial'.... no no... i've changed my mind... it was terrible... a truly truly horrible experience... - Cassox08 Oct 09
