starstarAll a bit of a mess, unfortunately, with the sound balance wrong, the set at odds with the costumes and the performances variable. Had it not been for the ever excellent Ruth Alexander Rubin I would have been even more grumpy. A pity that the excellent season at the Octagon has to finish on this scrappy production, which is afr below the excellent standards that the theatre has established as its norm. - Ecbian01 Jul 11
starQuite possibly the most disspointing theatre experience I have ever had the misfortune to see. Sweeney Todd is by turns; beautiful, funny, emotive, thrilling and heart-breaking. This production was none of the above. I do not believe that Elizabeth Newman really understood the piece that she was directing and seeing her in conversation after the show corroborated this. Tom Attwood the musical director took some self-important and ill-advised liberties with the score, making a mockery of one of the most beautiful scores in musical theatre history. Bar a couple of good performances, Judge Turpin most notable, I did not feel like I was watching a professional production; I have seen better amateur productions. If you are considering going to see this production I would recommend that you don't, wait until the Chichester Festival production inevitably transfers to the West End. A poor experience, and I would think twice about travelling over to Bolton again. - M Jardine27 Jun 11
