I agree with Dave Cunningham's review above. For people who knew Fred through his TV work, it needs to be borne in mind that this play claims merely to be BASED on his life - there is a fair admixture of pure soap. His "mates", for example, are a travesty of Fred's real-life helpers.
The accent is also dodgy - rather more Blackburn than Bolton, with the supporting characters seeming to range between Liverpool and South Wales and back. Considering this is playing in Fred's home town, that must be on a par with Dick van Dyke's famously strange take on Cockney.
Speaking of which - Michelle Collins does indeed work her socks off to make something of the role of Sheila Dibnah - she is undoubtedly the star of this production. - Lancastrian
