The creative team behind Enron have reunited for a thoughtful and often brilliant examination of the ethics of medical research and of the nature and treatment of depression. Billie Piper and Jonjo O'Neill are superb as the two volunteers who develop an irresistable attraction for each other that may be real but might be attributable to the drug they are testing. Anastasia Hille is excellent as the clinical psychologist conducting the trial before succumbing to depression herself and Tom Goodman-Hill impresses as always as the psychiatrist with flexible ethics and an array of agendas. The second half could do with having 10-15 minutes lopped off as it gets a bit bogged down with restating arguments in a less interesting way but there is no doubt that Lucy Prebble is a remarkable writer and The Effect loses little in comparison to the astonishing Enron. - David Baxter

Stunning direction and great performances. Anastasia Hille provides a masterclass in performance technique although all four cast members are at the top of their skills. A fascinating subject making for a most enjoyable and thought-provoking evening. - Carrie

This is good enough for the Commercial theatre so send star vehicles there. Acting by 3 of the 4 cast brilliant but play went on a bit. Some editing needed especially at the start. - David M

The acting is amazing and the staging superb, as always at the NT. In spite of a rather lengthy monologue on "the brain", our attention is held the whole time. "Surprise" ending is good. - Chris

An intense roller-coaster from a light-hearted comedy turned drama revealing the demons in us all. Brilliant cast. Personally, I do not see |"it all" but is okay in the context of the play. - Elisabeth
