starstarstarThe singing and music was good but I didn't get it... I disagree that the plot made more sense in it's modern day setting - Italy is unified now - no longer full of warring states - and why then not update the language too - why sing about swords when they are carrying guns?? And who, these days, worries about phantoms? As for the anachronisms... It was a laugh, though for all the wrong reasons. Very glad I had a WOS bargain ticket and didn't pay full price.... - kittykatisha08 Jul 11
starstarstarNot badly sung, well played and grey, grey, grey! This season has not been a vintage one at ENO - KJ20 Jun 11
starstarstarstarstarThe operatic Holy Grail is an updated production that works better now than the original conception, as in ENO’s Rigoletto. They’ve achieved it again here, setting the action in Genova today. The plot makes more sense, although if it’s swishing scarlet capes you are after then you will be disappointed. All of the singers were outstanding although Boccanegra, Amelia and Fiesco soared lyrically upwards. An impressive visual effect is achieved at the end of act I, and some did decry the committee room setting of the following acts but for me it was a perfect counterpoint to the raw emotion and florid poetic language onstage, with the chorus achieving harmonious beauty which set a new benchmark. Edward Gardner’s conducting drew rich tones, and the whole production is a triumph of lucidity and accessibility. - kilburncat09 Jun 11
