starstarstarstarstarThe Spirit Guardian again- I hate to break it to you negative people but it is just a theatre production and no one forced you to go see it. Yes many of did not find this amusing or frighening because the situations of present life happens to be much more realistic and gruesome. Also the reason why the peformance does not make sense to you is because you are staring stubbornly at the production without actually looking at the subtle hints that its leaving behind- really now it's much more psychological then you think. I am a firm believer in the existance of ghosts so this production has just spurred me on to prove their existance! - Yami Maibe12 Jul 11
starstarstarstarstarReally now this was one of the best theatre productions I've seen. It's extremmly hard on a actor to do a monologue as I study drama- however it was in fact not the scariest thing I've ever seen, quite the opposite really as I did laugh my head off most of the time (but then again I do have a warped and dark sense of humor). It does also help to have a background in the occult and the mysteries of poltergeists, spirits and demons to understand the meaning behind the story so I did quite enjoy myself. I would love to see Ghost Stories again if it ever appears in South Africa - Spirit Guardian of the Dark God Kek)12 Jul 11
starstarstarstarstarwent to see this last night - got tickets for a tenner - thought it was FANTASTIC - I didn't jump at all but lots of audience members did - I thought the stage set was incredible, the actors brilliant and the atmosphere really good. I would recommend it to anyone!!!! I actually want to see it again - Xine07 Jul 11
starstarstarI'd really appreciate someone please explaining the ending to me. Email me privately at rickdare58-aa@yahoo.com. I saw the play in late May 2011, and am still trying to figure it out. - Rick28 Jun 11
starNot in the least scary, I have no idea what the secret is, so no trouble keeping it. Why does a baby eat cat food. Can someone explain? - Now Potless27 Jun 11
starThankfully got the cheap seats - didn't mind walking out of it! Horrible story (didn't seem to exist), and the only scary bit was the man at the collections counter before we entered the show. - Mo24 Jun 11
stara truly horrible performance, lacked any storyline and the critics who wrote the good reviews must have been paid to do so. I read reviews prior to going, not believing what some people were saying - but i can honestly tell you it was really bad!! It is true that you are told not to tell the secrets of Ghost Stories but i reckon its cos they know it's awful and don't want others to know! Don't waste your money! Spend your hard-earned money elsewhere! - Tasha22 Jun 11
starstarstarstarstarLike other people, I am so pleased I didn't read to negative posts. This 'play' is so different from conventional theatre, and apart from the 'Carrie' like make you jump sequences, one of the most enjoyable parts of the night was putting all the parts together at dinner afterwards. It really entertaining with a bit of humour thrown in. The size of the theatre suits the play, and would probably not work in a large theatre. I am not going to give away the plot / secrets, but you must keep your eye on the narrator .Watch his mannerisms change and how he drinks water, the light change on him. This easily missed, but crucial the ending. All My Family young & old gave it a 10. If you are not impressed I'll give your money back – Vaughan From Leeds - Vaughan Rhodes - Leeds18 Jun 11
starReally Really Really rubbish show, not scary at all unless you're 10, they ask you not to give away the ending, but i think its more to do with the fact that they dont want you to tell everyone how rubbish it is. We went on a Friday night, paid for stall seats with a good view of the stage, about 10 minutes in a drunken lady threw up behind our seat, we had to move seat and ended up at the back of the theatre, when we complained we were asked to leave the theatre as we were disrupting other people and given tickets for another night, we made the trip back to watch it the next night but the seats we were given were not in same area in stalls and to be honest i wish we hadnt of bothered making the trip back into London to watch what turned out to be a very very poor ghost story. dont pay the £50 - £60 to get in, spend your money elsewhere - Jason13 Jun 11
starPiss poor. Worst show I've ever seen. If you call books falling off of a shelf horrific it's a must see. Come back Most Haunted - all is forgiven! When going to the loo, you'll be sent to watch the show on a monitor upstairs. I thought that might win me back. However, having sat down, all I could hear was the loud background music and all I could see on the monitor was a minute blur of a figure on what I guess was the stage. I'm not being bitter about the fact I couldn't get back in- I'm being bitter about the fact this show is appallingly poor!!!!!! - Joe10 Jun 11
starstarstarstarI think the one star reviewers need to pull their heads out of their own arse. Went to see this last night and had a great time, thank god I didn't read the reviews before going, or I might have been put off. If you've seen the League of Gentlemen, and enjoy the brand of Horror/Comedy that they produce you won't be disappointed. The acting was good as was the tension that they build up. Yes you can see the jumpy bits coming, but that doesn't make it any less 'jumpy'. How many times have you seen the eyeless head pop out in Jaws? You know it's coming but still affects you. In all I had a fantastic night, and for the most part people seem to be complaining because of the price? Well if you pay on the door you will pay £40 a ticket, maybe you should use the internet for shopping around, instead of writing negative, unimaginative reviews. - Rob09 Jun 11
starOh dear....This was the worst West End Show I've ever seen. It'll be great when its released for amateur companies, but there were no scary moments, no tension and no suspence. 30 minutes past before anything of any signficance happened. Very very poor. - Tom Relf30 May 11
starReally wish I'd spent my money on something else. Predictable overdone bullshit. - Marie27 May 11
starstarstarOK , so i fell for the hype , clever marketing. It's alright , even better if it's your first time at the theatre and you haven't seen Women in Black yet. The play has it's moments , but it's a different kind of horror . The monster kind , now unless your between the ages of 4 and 13 its not going to send you running for the exit. I think the days of monsters under our beds are long gone . What we want is a play that is dark , sinister , creepy , slightly disturbing , the type of thing that will make a grown man stain the seat of the theatre. Maybe a live exorcism with an unhappy ending . - thetheatreguy23 May 11
starstarI like many others paid £90 for two seats for me and my parnter. We to believed the over-hyped, powerful marketing that made us expect a lot more from this show. After the first inital scare (which didn't scare me) I realised I had backed a looser. I think this show could have been great but the actors/writers ruined many scary moments by adding comic phrases from the actors, runing the tension. So along with the laughter throughout and some poor special effects I was dissapointed and angry at the money I had paid. This should be a 'Magical' show as there is a massive trick in which they take money from people who think they are going to watch a scary show, when really there is no real horror. No wonder it says 'Must end in June' the theatre is probably fed up of the complaints! My advice, only go if you have a wild imagenation and are acred by anything, otherwise not scary. - Joe - Brighton22 May 11
starComplete and utter drivel. Not at all scary, half the audience were laughing. OK for kids I suppose. Don't waste your money on this. - Sara Stone15 May 11
starGreat disappointment, first time I have never applauded at a theatre and I have been a lot. Found the man that dropped his croissant on the floor at Waterloo station and then picked it up and ate it a lot more scary. Waste of money ! - Penny robinson07 May 11
starstarI consider myself s bit of a horror/thriller connoseiur and was extremely disappointed in this. Every 'scare' you could see coming. I didn't jump ONCE throughout the performance. It says at the end not to reveal the secret - I don't know how you can as nothing is explained properly. Utter waste of time and money - david27 Apr 11
starI was so angry once I left the theatre, I paid £85 for me and my 2 sisters to see the show. The flyer was an understatement at best and I found the show to be nothing but cheesy. Bar is a rip of, but given that it is London I let it off, But such a poor performance, that fact that people screamed when the light went off was silly. I had watched the trailer previously online and after seeing that performance I am convinved that those reactions taken were not from GHOST STORIES !!! I am easily scared but not thing in that performance was interesting. Very Very Angry complete waste of time and money. You would have a better fright walking down the halloween aisle at a supermarket. - Laura Goode20 Apr 11
starthe biggest rubbish I have ever seen. Very slow, boring, silly performance. Waste of time and money. I would like my money back. - hedviga olajosova 17 Apr 11
starstarIt's not scary. It's not fun. What is it? - giac farci09 Apr 11
starWatched this with an american broadway critic and he was shocked this was anywhere near the West End. Damaging to British theatre's reputation, a triumph of agressive marketing and a total STINKER! - ChrisC08 Apr 11
starHow this show has managed to hang around the West End this long is the biggest scare. I can only suspect that people giving it good reviews are friends of the actors / writers etc. There is nothing new here, basically a rather silly attempt at an Urban legend. Acting was all way over the top and unbelievable - the main guy was obviously told to project his voice and unfortunately shouted out every word which became rather annoying. It started with some promise but quickly went downhill and by half way through was almost laughable. The last five minutes were quite good but not nearly enough to save the show from getting this slating. All the celebs who raved about this show should be sued. Don't waste your money, unless you're 8 years old you will not be in the slightest bit scared. - Richard03 Apr 11
starstarMaybe I expected too much but I left feeling disappointed. The bar prices were very expensive also. I saw The woman in black last year and although that started slowly I thought that was better than this. Ghost Stories does have the odd moment that makes you jump but these are later on in the performance and I was bored stiff by then. I bought 2 seats at £45 in row H. Like similar reports before if you feel compelled to watch this then buy the cheaper seats as it isn't worth £45. As for the people i've seen before telling you after the show how scared they were. They must have been stooges and paid to say it. Sleepless nights don't make me laugh. - Trevor03 Apr 11
starstarAwful - reminded me of Joe off friends - Armature dramatics. Although my husband jumped out his seat and he does not believe in ghosts at all! If you fancy it purchase the cheapest seats, I think they are tying to be a bit twilight zone but not hitting the mark - Dissapointed22 Mar 11
starThis show is the biggest load of crap I've ever made the mistake of buying tickets for. Firstly it is not a)ghostly or b) a story. It's a really third rate am' dram' production based around some 'scary' (not) anecdots. At the end of the show a voice comes over the PA asking you not to say what happens in the show. What they really mean is don't tell anyone how shite it is. Don't waste your money. - Ripped off by Ghost Stories21 Mar 11
starstarstarstarstarJust came back from a fantastic time at ghost stories. I throughly enjoyed it and, as well as my dad, was on the edge of my seat through out the hole of the show. Although the show did not overly scare me out of my wits, it made me jump many times! The actors were very good and it was a different show to watch rather than the usual billy elliot! Anyway i would thoroughly recommend it ... get your tickets soon as they are cheap because its finishing soon! - Dave - Dave smith20 Mar 11
starstarstarstarI thoroughly enjoyed the evening as did my husband. We thought it was rather clever and enjoyed the funny moments along with the jumpy ones. I am not sure what the bad reviewers were expecting, fireworks, 3g technology or maybe just a ghost in the seat next to them!! Enjoy it for what it is a fun night out. |I enjoy serious theatre & musicals and this is just another aspect of theatre, my next venture is Woman in Black which is also supposed to be very good.If you enjoy something a bit different then do go and see ghost stories if you want to be seriously scared you probably need to ask yourself why?? Maybe a ride at Thorpe park?? The cast of ghost stories were brilliant. - Caroline20 Mar 11
starAbsolutely rubbish. The worst show i have ever seen. Im amazed that this show can have few good review. These people must be nuts or i dont know what. This show is good for 1980, but in the world we live now you expect people come out with some sort of special effects, playing with lighting etc. From scary stuff it was a girl on a stage for 2 seconds and for another 15 second man jumping on the stage wearing costume. The lord of the rings musical which i was lucky to see few years ago was so much better in scary stuff with orks, big spider and Bilbo vanished on stage. Dont waste your time and money for this show. - lora07 Mar 11
starQuite possibly the most disappointing show I've seen in the West End over the past 30 years or so. I agree with other reviewers the marketing people have done a wonderful job and hyped this to the extreme. Shame the play doesn't deliver in the same way. I was bored senseless. My partner and I had forgetten all about what we'd just seen by the time we got to Waterloo Station and just wanted to get home. Save your money. This one is a stinker! - Jonnie F06 Mar 11
starstarstarstarstarThoroughly enjoyable evening. I think some people are missing the fact that it is supposed to be funny as well as scary, then because they are not scared witless they feel as though they have been cheated. I jumped and screamed several times as well as laughed a lot. Great tension building and hugely entertaining. (Btw, you cannot compare to Woman in Black as it is altogether a different type of play.) - Kim04 Mar 11
starstarstarThe number of one star reviews of this production give a disappointingly low overall score for what is not at all a bad theatrical experience. I would urge readers of these reviews to see this production and make up their own minds but based on a prior knowledge that there are common elements linking the stories, the entire set up from the moment you enter the theatre hints at the denouement, and that this is not a "fright of your life" piece despite what the marketing and hype might suggest. Many of the techniques used are 'classic' in the sense that you do know what's coming most of the time, and it is not a jump a minute show, but I found it enjoyable, well acted and with genuinely creepy moments. For accurate reviews reflecting the production I would seek out the professional reviews in the media rather than many of the extreme views expressed here. This is not the best thing you will see all year, but neither is it by any means any of the incredibly negative suggestions you will find below. - Little Miss Lion01 Mar 11
starstarstarstarI am a regular theatre goer and I have to say that I think many folks are being too hard and too generous to this play. It's not a 1 nor a 5, but it was 80mins of camp fire fun. I laughed and jumped once or twice. I loved some of the stage effects, they were produced by people who genuinely adore horror. If you are the type who is easily scared or you snobbishly dismiss a horror tale do not book tickets- but if you like 80mins of light entertainment with a scare or two, and appreciate the effort everyone has made, give this play a spin:) Personally, I think I will take my parents- my Dad is such a scaredy-cat:)) - Mick M20 Feb 11
starworst thing we have ever seen, total waste of time and money - greta18 Feb 11
starstarstarstarI think the people who are moaning are clearly idiots. the show was great, funny and did make me jump. thats what its ment to be, fun! So lighten up and enjoy it. - Liam18 Feb 11
starWe went to see this show last Friday and found it an utter waste of both our time and money. We were bored to death with it. It was about as frightening as a trip on a ghost train at a funfair - in other words it might scare an eight year old of a nervous disposition. As both a writer and reader of English ghost stories, I do know a reasonable amount about this particular literary genre and this infantile drivel was absolutely awful. Anyone expecting something along the lines of "The Woman in Black" will be truly disappointed. - Jonathan13 Feb 11
starI now understand why the barman said that people have been known to walk out-which I did through sheer boredom not fear-this is literally the worst show I have seen-why I have to give it 1 star? - Nick30 Jan 11
starThis was the worst show I have ever seen in my 43 years on this earth-the bar prices were scarier than the show £200 ish for cabs, drinks and a bite to eat-I think Derren Brown who NymAN IS INVOLVED WITH IS SUPERB I can't believe he has seen this show and not had a polite word with his pal telloing him what a load of crap this is - Nick30 Jan 11
starstarI was fairly disappointed with Ghost Stories.. The build up and hype about it was more scary than the actual thing. I have no idea why its been given a 15 rating either. I'm just glad I bought tickets in the cheaper seats - I really wouldn't waste your money! Woman in black was better! I think I laughed more than jumped and I agree with kate, I was definitely bored in parts. I suppose sitting in front of the loud speakers kept me awake! The plot seemed a bit disjointed and I felt like I was watching some amateur play by school kids.. - Em30 Jan 11
starIf you could choose a minus score this would be minus 1000! not a regular theatre goer or critic in general. however i feel a responsibility to convey my thoughts on this production. in simplest terms I would describe this a complete scam! newspaper reviews, the website video player of peoples reaction the directors appearance on bbc breakfast are all absolute lies created to make you think this will a 'terryfying' experience. it was in fact absolute pants, the worst thing I have seen and complete waste of money. very dissapointing to the least. the producers (money makers) should be ashamed to think this was any good. STRONGLY URGE you NOT to waste your time or money. - pissed off punter30 Jan 11
starstarstarstarstarI also don't understand the negative reviews, they must have been watching a different play. My audience jumped and screamed and seemed to be loving it. I was scared and enjoyed the play very much. I recommend it. - Jim08 Jan 11
starstarstarstarstarSaw the show last night and thought it was absolutely amazing! I've been wanting to see this for months and Im so glad I finally got to see it. It was so cleverly written, the actors were fantastic, the tension that was created in the theatre was brilliant. Everything about this play was excellent. I read some of the negative reviews before I went to see the show, and to be honest the people that are writing these comments are expecting the ridiculous. You guys have totally missed the whole point of the evening, which is so frustrating and very sad that the majority of the reviews are so negative. I'm definately seeing this again before it finishes it's run in London. - Jessica 08 Jan 11
starAbsolute rubbish. Its all hype and nothing else. Very clever marketing and PR so I applaud the production team for that. We went to the 9pm show so that we would be suitably scared, but found ourselves falling asleep in boredom! Believe me when I say this is all hype. I wished I had taken note of reviewers who had said the same. I could have saved over £100 on the 3 tickets I bought :( - Maria Roberts06 Jan 11
starNot scary at all. Very hyped up don't bother - save your money. - Lucia22 Nov 10
starI would like a full refund. The opening credits to In The Night Garden scares me more than this overpriced crap did. Seriously don't bother. - Robert21 Nov 10
starI have to agree with all the other BAD reviews. UTTER and COMPLETE TRIPE! My 6yr old would not be scared by it. I too kept thinking any minute this is going to get going theres going to be some climax of some sort, some suspense maybe - nothing nothing nothing. Just some swotty type on stage who likes the sounds of his own voice and thinks he's terribly terribly clever. BOOORRRRINNNNGGGG! We walked straight out and went to see Le Soiree! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!! - Sarah, Fetcham21 Nov 10
starstarstarstar Loved it: I took my girlfriend for her birthday, and both had a really fun night. Yes it’s not Shakespeare, but that’s not the point. We went to be entertained in a non pretentious way and have some cheap scares thrown in there for good measure - Ghost Stories delivers this! I really don't understand the completely negative reviews given, and the absolute damnation of the acting and plot is going overboard. The acting and story were good. The story is relatively straight forward and while there is a twist at the end, in my opinion, if you don't “get it” you shouldn't be allowed out on your own, let alone the opportunity to access a computer to voice your theatrical views - it’s pretty simple and explained very clearly. If you didn't get this story, then maybe Disney on Ice may be more to your intellectual level. My opinion: go see the show: have a scare and a laugh. Just don’t expect your world to be rocked with absolute terror beyond your comprehension (to which the beginning of the show discusses...) It’s all just a very entertaining bit of fun! - Grendel Nootboom17 Nov 10
starWhat an expensive and dissapointing night out. Very short and nothing clever about it at all. A bit like a college performance, very amateur. No illusions at all, just acting. Set changes not that great. Didn't understand the plot. Would not recommend. - Holly14 Nov 10
starPlease do not waste your time or money going to see this absoutle rubbish. It seemed that it was thought up by a five year old. I am normally quite a jumpy person but i had to stop myself falling asleep in this, the only thing that stoped me was when thet=y cranked the noise up to 100 decibles which ony left me with earache. The set looked so cheaply made and with only 5 actors they must be raking it in and rubbing there hands together laughing . Please Please do not go and see. - Alex11 Nov 10
starstarDisappointing. Ultimately, the twist at the end seemed more like a device. There were jumpy moments, but it's not difficult to make people jump. What Ghost Stories lacked was the real chill and play-on-the-mind element of a truly great ghost story. Once it was over, it didn't leave much to worry about in the wee small hours. - Roz24 Oct 10
starplease please please do not waste your money or time on this utter rubbish. So very disappointing .Travelling on the underground to this venue was more scarey. It felt like watching a 6th form school production and that is an insult to 6th form productions. paid 80 Pound for tickets. I may as well have wripped up the 80 pound. sorry to be so negative. - michael bakers23 Oct 10
starWhat a total waste of money. Not the least bit scary. An utter disappointment. Would not recommend this show to anyone. Refund please??? - Anna11 Oct 10
starfelt that it was a total load of rubbish. shame really when you think how many shows are on in London. Maybe i didnt understand it or maybe i did. it's only an hour and half and when it ends your thinking has it ended. - SS02 Oct 10
starstarstarstarI thought that this play was very good. People saying its absolute rubbish, did you actually watch any of it? And those saying that it makes no sense, I can understand. It is a hard story to follow, but when you finally get it, it is spectacularly clever. An evening ruined some people have said? Poor acting? I cannot possibly see how you could have said this. It was a brilliant play, yes maybe it has been hyped up to be worse than it is but I personally feel that if you go into the theater, saying to yourself, its all fake, theyre just actors, and dont allow yourself to be a little scared, then you're not going to get the full experience of it. The idea, is to make you scared, and scared I definately was! The audience screamed a fair few times I must say. My girlfriend absolutely loved it, and was scared too. The acting I thought was good, not amazing but nothing bad to comment on! And yes this play is expensive, but if you pay attention to the detail they put into the costumes, the set, the make-up, then of course they need to charge alot, I thought my money was well spent personally! Do not be put off by people saying it was absolute rubbish it really isnt. Just go to see it, and go in with an open mind, and allow yourself to be scared, and drawn into the story and I think you'll find you will enjoy the production massively. :) - Jake, 2130 Sep 10
starstarstarstarstarAn absolutely thrilling piece. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire time, constantly holding the hand of the person beside me! I'm a student studying GCSE drama, and I found the acting very good. Yes the acting could have been better, but I couldn't say it was bad. The technical elements of this production were fantastic, with a clever set. I have to say, since watching ghost stories last week, i have been jumping at everything, and I am a person who enjoys horror films and doesn't find any particularly scary. But this production is just something else. If you get scared easily I suggest that you don't see it as it is rather discomforting. A brilliantly clever story line has been written here, and I credit the writers fully. I can't understand myself why the reviews are so low of only three stars, I was not disappointed with ghost stories, and as I am studying drama I look at plays in a critical way, and couldn't find much wrong with this play at all! A brilliant experience, and definitely worth seeing in my opinion, do not miss it!! - Maria30 Sep 10
starstarstarstarstarI'm actually really surprised that this has received such poor reviews. I saw it last night and was incredibly impressed. It is well-executed, has a very clever plot line - all these people who are saying it doesn't make sense, I can only assume that they didn't really understand it - you do have to pay attention quite closely. And those people who are saying that there is no link between the stories of the 3 people - did you actually see the ending?? The twist at the revealed what the link was and it was then apparent that there had been clues throughout. I guess maybe it could be described as a psychological thriller rather than a pure horror which is why people didn't like it. If you're looking for a blood & guts, gorefest, Freddy Krueger type show, then maybe this isn't for you, but if you like a story that makes you think and leaves you marvelling at how clever it is, then you should enjoy this. - Becky26 Sep 10
starstarstarstarstarI feel the majority of reviewers have missed the point of the evening. Maybe it's mistitled and the hype about a scary evening is perhaps OTT, but the real scare is once you think back afterwards, having realised the nature of the play. It's all about making you think about the nature of reality. Did none of the reviewers realise this? And the significance of the identical time? And all the odd references? Everything ties up at the end, once you realise just what's been happening. I'm not going to give away what happens but I feel sorry for those people who gave it the low scores - they have obviously completely failed to understand the play! Don't go expecting a scary Alton Towers ride - it's not that sort of evening and perhaps it shouldn't try to give this impression. What is impressive is the writing and how everything ties up at the end, and creates more questions for you to ponder over at your leisure. BTW, I didn't find Woman in Black in the least scary. - Suzanne Evans23 Sep 10
starstarstarstarstarI can't understand where all these negative reviews are coming from! I saw this when it ran in Liverpool in quite a small theatre, so maybe in a larger theatre it loses something. Nevertheless it was really enjoyable, you have to get into the right frame of mind for it I suppose. Don't let poor reviews put you off, just go to see it and make a judgement for yourself. - Tracey21 Sep 10
starMy wife and I watched this play and were disappointed. I agree the acting was good but not at all scarey. A lot of the audience walked out early. Be aware that the theatre staff let late comers in at any time during play which does not help the atmosphere. Recommend "love never dies" instead which was excellant. - Bob G18 Sep 10
starTook my boyfriend as a surprise birthday and I nust say we were totally disappointed!!! A waste of money and just didn't understand all the hype!!! Not worth the money at all. - Rebel13 Sep 10
starstarstarstarstarI feel I need to counter some of the negative reviews added here - I took my husband to see Ghost Stories last night and we thought it was brilliant. The three tales are cleverly interwoven (I didn't think this was overly subtle, but it obviously passes some people by!), the acting was superb and, for us, the production contained a great combination of tense, jumpy, darkly comic and genuinely chilling moments - an admirable tribute to the old horror compilations that the writers so clearly were inspired by. If you go along hoping to be scared out of your skull for the next two weeks, then maybe you're missing the point. If you go along hoping to be thoroughly entertained for 80 minutes and allow yourself to relax into all the clever tricks, manipulations and suspense techniques this production employs, then I reckon you'll have a great night. It's not an Alton Towers ride, it's a play! Our only disappointment was in the theatre staff, who let latecomers in 15 minutes into the show and stood whispering at the back (we were in the upper circle). Very annoying as this took us out of the magical experience for a while. - New Mrs W12 Sep 10
starstarstarstarstari saw ghost stories last night and i loved it. it is like nothing i have ever seen before i would happily go see it again. Although if you dont like to be scared then dont bother because this is very scary and it also plays with mind. if you are going to see it then get ready to be sleeping with the lights on because this play is 100% going to scare you. oh and those that say that it isnt scary or jumpy are lying and are just to ashamed to admit it. YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!!!!! - Mollie P09 Sep 10
starstarIt wasn't all that bad. It wasn't so much frightening, but it was entertaining for the prospect of being frightening if that counts. Obviously, when the end comes and it hasn't been frightening, that's a bit annoying. Also, a slightly odd, jarring third tale that doesn't really tie in at all with the genre (a cat-food eating demon baby?) and slightly reminiscent of a bad twighlight zone perhaps. And the acting's a bit panto in places (leading the audience to mentally slot in 'it's behind you' in the appropriate places). And yes the tales could have been more cleverly woven together and the ending a real ambiguous cliffhanger rather than a who shot jr/it was all just a dream thing, but hey, they at least tried to bring something different to the west end. Always be prepared that something may not live up to the hype. - Deedee03 Sep 10
starEndorse the majority of the comments above - it was complete rubbish and an utter con. Created some good potential situations to scare but never never delivered. Fortunately our meal beforehand was a lot of fun, otherwise the night would have been ruined. - ian03 Sep 10
starA total sham! WARNING: do not get tricked into spending any money on this hoax. There are so many truly great shows to see in the west End. This is certainly NOT one of them. A load of total rubbish. Childrens entertainment at the most. No story, no connection whatsoever with the characters, very bad acting, totally over priced. Do yourself a favour and choose to go somewhere else. - Franck30 Aug 10
starstarNot at all scary. My husband and I were in the stalls. I was waiting for it to get going but it never did. I could understand why some people left half way through. It was disappointing, a bit like when you spend £35 on a firework and it just goes 'pop, fizz', absolutely no climax. More annoyingly there were far too many latecomers allowed in. Everytime the doors opened I thought it was part of the plot. Don't go and see this go and see Woman in Black or 39 Steps for good theatre. - Dawn, Bournemouth23 Aug 10
starDisappointing rubbish. A total rip off. Not at all scary and more like an 'am dram' production. Don't waste your money, go to a real west end show, eg Phantom of the Opera - much more scary. - Tina23 Aug 10
starIt was extremley BAD.. worst experience ever.. a ripped off. - Sandra23 Aug 10
starstarVery disappointing. Seems to revolve around mobile phones going off on stage and the person staring at the "text" he's been sent for minutes on end. Why? There seems to be no relevance to all of these "calls". The beginning needs to kick off a bit quicker. You wait endlessly for this night porter to get out of his offce and look around the area but instead the audience are subjected to listening to stupid conversations with a Russian on a walkie talkie, listening to the sounds of a porn movie and watching this guy make himself a coffee. This play is a breath-taking disappointment on all counts which is not helped by so much boring dialogue from the professor and not enough stunts to be honest. I also found the references to cancer and miscarriages a little bit strange - these themes don't come under the umbrella of entertainment in my eyes. - Jemima20 Aug 10
starAfter all the hype I read I was very disappointed. None of the stories were scary, all relying on BOO! moments to get the few jumps. Lots of plot points were not developed and some were left unresolved (eg the other East European night watchman). Apart from the common time (3.45 am) there seemed no links between the stories. I have read and seen (eg The Haunting original version) much scarier ghost stories than any on view here. - Harry14 Aug 10
starstarThe actors can not be falted and the story was somewhat believable, but while it did a good job of building tension, when it came to the point of what was meant to be scary you had either fell asleep as you waited too long or it just was not that scary at all. Better off saving your money and renting a horror movie as this certainly wasn't the "live horror show" i was expecting. - martin t04 Aug 10
starstarWas very disappointed, thought more could of been made of the first story, but there was nothing that made me jump in fright. What was annoying was the young girls screaming at nothing. Would of been better without all the hype and the over the top reactions from people - jean03 Aug 10
starcrap. I was more scared by Toy Story 3. - Martin02 Aug 10
starstarWas Disappointed....constant talking in the audience as well as some stupid teenagers crying over nothing. Good amount of tension but a very short performance (80mins max with no interval). - DW19 Jul 10
starstarstarEnjoyed it but the advertisement for this is a bit OTT. It is not a jump in your seat fright night. It is a good night of what the titke says Ghost Stories--well executed and entertaining so a good night at the theatre. - joe spiteri17 Jul 10
starstarSaw it last night at the Duke of Yorks and was very dissapointed. Yes the soundscape is good and the set up promising but then you are left with 80 mins of sub standard effects. I think a fellow audience members comment when leaving summed it up perfectly "I've been more scared and seen better effects on a cheap fairground Ghost Train ride." Woefully dissapointing - Glen16 Jul 10
starstarstarIt was alright. - Reis15 Jul 10
starstarI felt this play is over rated and overpriced. Lack of tension and pace throughout and cheap tricks are used to make you jump. Felt more like a comdey as it was so unconvincing and defiantley not scary. if you want to see a truly frighting well acted piece of theatre i highly highly recomend 'Women in Black' not this rubbish. - Emma13 Jul 10
starI took a group of 8 people and only 1 thought it was actually acceptable, but I don't think even he thought it was scary. There were bits when you jumped; just like if someone jumps out at you from behind a door kind of jumped. But the fear and terror you experience in, say, The Woman in Black, is not there at all. Highly disappointing I think, redeemed only by the fact that our tickets cost only £5. I am a believer in ghosts so should have had a higher propensity to be scared I think. And goodness knows there are enough really good scary ghost stories out there; surely it shouldn't be so difficult to come up with a good one on stage. The whole production is only 1 hr 20mins long, and they put 3 short stories in there, which are anyway poor but limited buildup too since they are quite short. I think this is one of the worst plays I've seen in a long time. Quite embarrassed to have suggested it to my friends. - Alicia 12 Jul 10
starstarI went to see this show in March and had high hopes after reading some impressive reviews. I write this now to say, do not waste your money nor your time. I have always been a fan of horror films (decent horror films), but not a believer in ghosts. It is only when the terror remains hidden and un-named, does the tension build and thus creates true fear. No special effects or sound system can be more powerful than your own imagination. I can honestly say I started to feel bored halfway through and I only jumped in parts because the sound system was notched up to 11, delivering the only true terror to my poor ear drums! One reviewer likened the show to the 'Saw' films (not sure he went to see the same show as I did) and another ghost train rides. Mmmm. Good idea, poor execution. - Kate16 Apr 10
starstarstarstarstarI absolutely loved it. i jumped alot it was original and different. it kept replaying in my head when I was trying to sleep. i thought it was very clever how they made it jumpy and how they acheived the effects without blood and gore - claire03 Apr 10
starstarstarstarI enjoyed the production a lot. It harked back to an older style of entertainment wth nods to Dickens and MR James, but the major influence (as indicated by the poster flashed onto the screen during the 'lecture') is the excellent portmanteau movie, 'Dead of Night' - amabush06 Mar 10
starstarstarstarI thought it was very enjoyable with some great jump in your seats moments. Why, though, can no reviewer grasp that the group were the League of GentleMEN? League of Gentleman makes no sense... - Quentin03 Mar 10
starstarstarstarGhost Stories is not quite a 'terrifying' experience, but it has its share of scary moments, cheesy moments, and chuckles, and builds to a clever, and surprisingly thought-provoking climax. What more can you ask for? - houndtang28 Feb 10
