starstarstarstarstarFunny, sad, poinent. I was moved to tears. Saw this performance in Aberdeen. Had to travel 250 mile round trip to see this show. It was amazing and well worth it. Just wish it was nearer central belt. Would recommend this to anyone. Met someone there who had went to see show twice because she was so impressed by it. The show brought you back to a bygone era. Judy had a remarkable talent but behind the facade was a delicate and vulnerable person who lived life on the brink. Tracie acting was amazing and superceded my expectations. I brought my son (14 years old) reluctantly along to the show but he thought it was first class too. - saffy30 Oct 11
starstarstarstarstarA virtuoso performance from the formidably talented Tracie Bennett. This is an award winning performance and ought to be a dead-cert transfer across the pond. I haven't enjoyed a show so much for so long. Brilliant! - cjm16 May 11
starstarstarstarstarSaw this production yesterday it was Awesome! Tracie Bennett was just amazing her voice and looks uncanny. If you get the chance to see it before it closes you will not regret it. Live Theatre at its Greatest! - Gman01 Apr 11
starstarstarstarstarI saw this production in November and was bowled over by Tracie Bennett's performance. The whole play is superb imo. Maybe Quilter or another writer will do a play about Gary Glitter's life, now that would be an ideal role for Hilton Mcrae and he'd receive all the accolades coming to him, if he can sing like him as well, that is. Well done to everyone involved in the production and much luck. I hope it wins all four Oliviers. - Oliver21 Feb 11
starstarstarstarstarDavid Baxter. How strange how people's opinions differ, now I found Hilton McRae's performance too subtle but as a support role, one wouldn't expect him to over-play or upstage the lead character. And a lead role is what it describes, a lead role, so it gets all the attention. It wouldn't be right not to do. The fact that McRae is funny all boils down to the lines written for him, now if it was his own wit.... Tracie Bennett is more than spectacular as the star Judy Garland, and all the five star reviews confirm this. I too am of the opinion that Bennett should receive the Olivier Award for her superb performance. Does/has anyone ever given a one line acknowledgment when accepting an award? There are many to thank for being up there. It would be rude to miss anyone out. The encore, to me, is so befitting of Judy, she did encores then left the audience/fans begging for more. Terry Johnson has directed that encore brilliantly as is Quilter's writing brilliant; and yes we still beg for more just as fans did for Judy. - judyfan21 Feb 11
starstarstarstarTracie Bennett is not a performer I have warmed to in the past as I have found her OTT style to be dangerously close to over-acting and even upstaging. Ironically though these were precisely the characteristics which make her portrayal of an out of control Judy Garland so memorable. Having said that I admired even more the subtle, touching and very funny performance of Hilton McRae as her devoted pianist. The play itself verges on being repetitive and would have benefitted from more insight into Garland's past, however well known that story is, to give it more context. I also felt the post curatin call encore was a mistake and it would have been much better to end with a haunting Over the Rainbow. Peter Quilter's play is not dissimilar to Piaf and I have a feeling that there will be an almost identical play in a few years about the last days of Michael Jackson. Bizarrely Elena Roger did not win a WoS award for Piaf but I expect to see Tracie Bennett on stage next Sunday - just don't expect a restrained acceptance speech. - David Baxter11 Feb 11
starstarstarstarTerrible TERRIBLE play. Amazing central performance from Bennett. In fact the only reason to see this is her. Everything else fades into insignificance, as will the play after the run ends. - Cassox06 Feb 11
starstarstarstarI don’t really share the fascination and adulation many still have with Judy Garland over 40 years after her death. I’d even go as far as to say that way too much has been said and written about her. In fact, I find the obsession with dead ‘stars’ in general a bit difficult. Not a great starting point for this show then! By focusing on a very short period at the end of her life, what playwright Peter Quilter has done is delivered something with more psychological depth than your average biographical play. I can’t say I entirely understand what turns someone into the wreck she was at the end of her life, but the play does help you begin to understand. The action takes place in her London hotel room (finely detailed design from the great Bill Dudley) and the Talk of the Town where she is performing a five-week stint. The two men in her life are the other main characters – gay pianist and confidante Anthony and toy boy fiancée / manager Micky; the motivation of the former seemingly genuine but the later somewhat dubious. By playing out the tempestuous will-she-won’t-she-perform back story alongside concert scenes, the play explores the psychological and emotional journey they’re all on. I was a bit shocked when the hotel room wall rose to reveal a small band, but these performance scenes and snatches are an important element to the story – fortunately they’re played for realism in context rather than concert perfection. It must be very difficult to play any other character against this larger-than-life icon, but both Stephen Hagan as Mickey and Hilton McRea do extremely well to bring their characters to life. I felt Tracie Bennett occasionally came close to pushing her performance over the edge, but it is an extraordinary acting achievement. At the curtain call, I was so exhausted I only just managed to get to my feet to join the spontaneous ovation, while she bounced on stage looking like she could do it all over again! To turn this cynic around is no mean achievement and to witness Tracie Bennett’s own star performance is an unmissable treat. - Gareth James07 Jan 11
starstarstarstarstarSOPHINISBA You must be young, the reverb was used for Judy Garland, it was the style then. You're either very young or a very jealous singer. Tracie Bennett is fantastic as Judy.....no, she IS Judy full stop. This is the best production I have ever seen in 70 years of going to theatre. - judyfan05 Dec 10
starstarstarWould you be quite so impressed by her singing if the sound man didn't add a reverb to her voice and boost the volume to aircraft engine levels to create excitement as she neared the end of each song? She was good, but not wonderful, and the others were servicible. - Sophinisba30 Nov 10
starstarstarstarstarsaw this x2 in northampton earlier in the yaer so knew it was good show ...but it suits trafalger really well great thaetre for the show ... all the cast are are fab ... Tracie Bennett is AMAZING as judy ... she desrves every award going..she really lives the part , a rollercoaster of emotions every one believable .. over the rainbow bought me and many of the audience to tears ... and for once a proper emotional standing ovation everyone on there feet together ...hope it runs well and tours .... only minor was some of the songs on the mic were not quite balanced band drowned out amazing vocals .... cant wait to go again - robg30 Nov 10
starstarstarstarstarBrilliant--the whole thing and really should stay in the West End a long time to allow everyone possible a chance to see this polished production. We love Tracie Bennett anyway from all we have seen her in "She Loves Me", La Cage", "Hairspray", "Les Mis" etc but in those she is always a valued and great Supporting actress. Here she is the star and Wow does she act and sing well and in true garland style, so the whole thing was so credible. A superb night out of great Theatre. Hilton and Stephen in the other two roles were also good. - Joe Spiteri30 Nov 10
starstarstarstarstarThere are very occasionally those spine tingling moments in the theatre when you realise that the actor on stage is giving THE performance of their life. This afternoon, I experienced one such moment watching Tracie Bennett as Judy Garland in End of the Rainbow - she completely inhabits the role and delivers one of the... best performances I have seen on stage in quite a while. A word too for Hilton McRae who gave a very tender, touching performance as Judy's pianist, Anthony. Brilliant! - Paul Wallis25 Nov 10
starstarstarstarstarSaw the show on the first night. As a Judy's fan I thought Tracie Bennett's singing, acting was spotless on top of that she added her own special magic ! - Roy Tan photographer23 Nov 10
starstarstarstarstarthis is one of the best productions i have ever seen at the royal. it has west end transfer written all over it. - tim shea15 Feb 10
starstarstarstarstarA magical piece of theatre that no one should miss. Tracie Bennett gives an outstanding performance as the drug ridden alcoholic star. With magnificant stamina she takes the audience through a roller coster of emotions. The superb supporting cast add to the enjoyment of this wonderful piece of theatre, however it is Miss Bennett who steals the show. She is quite frankly brilliant. - grant winston15 Feb 10
