starstarstarMy aversion to modern rhyming couplets is massively reinforced by Martin Crimp's showy adaptation of Moliere. The sense of the dialogue is lost as you wait for the next ostentatious and forced rhyme. It also leads to some of the cast speaking with an unnatural rhythm with emphases in the wrong places. Dominic Rowan and the peerless Tim McMullan fare best and Damian Lewis is the most natural although a bit gabbled at times. In contrast Tara Fitzgerald shouts and surprisingly over-acts, but the majority of the minor characters are irrelevant stereotypes. Keira Knightley deserves credit for choosing this for her stage debut: the character may not be much of a stretch but her dialogue is challenging and in the second half she produces the one credible display of emotion, although she is on the receiving end of the least convincing stage slap I have ever seen from Lewis. Thea Sharrock directs at a furious pace and The Misanthrope is entertaining for a couple of hours but this version is as shallow as Knightley's Jennifer. - David Baxter03 Feb 10
starWell having seen this play last night I'm at a lost reading the above review as to having seen the same play and actors!!!! It was as if the cast were all acting individually totally unrelated to the other characters on the stage and at times the dialogue was lost due to breathlessness especially Damien Lewis who claerly has no vocal stamina when having to state more than a dozen words. Keira actually made me uncomfortable to watch her with the grimaces and contortions of her facing she could win first prize in a gurning competition and why were the hands constantly splayed. Normally I leave the theatre even after a dissappointing play thinking at least he/she was good but absolutley no one stood out and having seen waiting for godot last week where the actors were superb this play was dire!!!! - David David02 Feb 10
starstarstarIt might be of interest to point out that Covington's play is actually a snarky summary of David Hare's Skylight which was the must-see play in 1996 when this translation was first put on. Odd that it wasn't updated as almost nobody seems to get the joke now. - T R P Watson18 Dec 09
