starI thought this play was absolutely dreadful. The only bit that i remember was the bit when he came on at the beginning and was on the ladder. Then from then on i just fell asleep. DONT GO TO SEE IT. Worst show ever created. Absolute WASTE of money. - larna18 Dec 09
starstarstarstarstarIt's absurdist - it's not supposed to be interpreted. It's a one act play -there's not supposed to be an interval. With the calibre of acting and physicality involved I'm finding it incredibly difficult to believe that sleep was even an option. ***** - Joey28 Nov 09
starstarstarAn OK production apart from Miriam Margoyles' brief, but wonderfully touching performance as Nell. Beckett refused to explain any of his work and it was probably wise of him not to! Never the less it has it moments with its somewhat crudely wrought visual comedy and cheap gags. I don't suppose it was that which wowed the French existentialists in its day? For us sceptical ol' Brits it's hard to take the surreal when it comes to theatre even though we readily accept some of Shakespeares more bizarre efforts. I saw Michael Gambon play Hamm with Lee Evans as Clov a few years back, Gambon was much better suited for the role. I do like Mark Rylance and he did give it his best shot, but he wasn't anywhere close to matching Gambon's performance - but then who is? I don't think I shall be bothering to see another attempt at it for the foreseeable future - Endgame, set and match. - rds27 Nov 09
starI fell asleep it was so boring. I don't think I've ever been to a worse play in my entire life. It was drab, incomprehensible and downright dull. Some in the audience laughed, but I cannot think why. I now know why there was no interval - not many would have returned. - Peter25 Nov 09
starstarstarI've been a bit low in spirits lately but now I'm really depressed. Seduced by the sparking McKellen / Stewart Godot I thought I'd give another Becket a try, but there is nothing here to relieve the unremitting misery or any attempt to place events into any context. I have a suspicion Becket might have been playing a joke because lines like "when will it ever end?" and similar brought ironic agreement from the audience. The cast delivered the text bravely (heaven knows how Richard Briers would have done it) but Endgame does not allow for even the slightest glimmer of hope. - David Baxter12 Nov 09
starstarstarstarstarThis says little about the actual production and much more about why it's time for Michael Coveney to retire. It's not nearly as good as a review I read from him in 1987. It's a magnificent production, by the way, for those who can tear their eyes away from their cobwebbed theatrical scrapbooks and enagae with it. - Audience16 Oct 09
starstarstarstarstarI saw Endgame and thought that the production was brilliant. A three star rating doesn't really do it justice. - Ursula White16 Oct 09
