I loved it. The songs were wonderful and the dancing spectacular (especially from the angels). The priest has the best lines, but there were plenty of laughs. Slightly too much kissing for my liking and I was going to write to the Director and complain that the stars never actually do the big Gershwin number on the adverts (her in the long white dress and him in the tux), but overall I enjoyed it. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Having recently visited this show, I thought it was super, and so much better than last year's performance at Chichester. The show has everything you could ask for, superb dancing, lovely songs and the comedy. I hope it will continue for many months, and with Tim Flavin and Janie Dee in their original roles. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

A very low budget affair,I thought it was very disappointing,Tim Flavin cant sing for toffee and his dancing which I heard was great, even makes Michael Ball look good and Janie Dee looks very old for the part and the water scene is so silly and very amusing seeing the front two rows in plastic macs!
I could not recommend this show at all, certainly not for £37.50 anyway!! a show only OAP's would enjoy really for there discounted rate. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

I saw this at Chichester last year and loved it. I have now seen it twice in London because it's just so enjoyable! I have always thought Tim Flavin was one of the finest performers around and he and Janie Dee are excellent. The cast all seem to be enjoying themselves (if they're being honest backstage!) - Jenny Galloway is super as ever, and has fitted in veryt well having not been in the original. of course some of the 'cornyness' is actually poking fun light-heartedly at this sort of 30s/40s musical. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Would have been a 5-star show apart from the appalling sound design. I lost count of the number of times a singer's volume dropped for no apparent reason. It really let down what was otherwise a great show. The dancing was of the highest order and it was obvious that the cast were having as much fun as we were. Also I loved the set, it was simply stunning. I left with a spring in my step and a song in my heart. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Two and a half hours of Gershwin should have been a joy, but the production lacked both style and energy despite a flawless performance by Janie Dee. It appears to have been choreographed by a committee. Some moments evoke a train wreck waiting to happen while others display crispness and imaginative and intelligent use of space.
Tim Flavin's contribution was noticeably wooden, especially contrasted with that of the character of "Mr, Magix." Only Gershwin's magnificent score saved an otherwise ho-hum evening.

This is what I wanted, some good escapist fun. Lovely songs, great choreography, laughs, not too much to strain the brain or depress. Been there with all those other shows, Les Miz, Beautiful Game, Phantom, and now they've taken away stunning Starlight Express, and with Cats running out of lives, let's have something that leaves you feeling uplifted when you leave the theatre, and that certainly happens with My One & Only. Anyway, what's wrong with a good old fashioned show with hoofers, it was okay for the audiences of Astaire and Kelly so why not for us. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

the show that I saw in "rural sussex" this past summer, might have been light summer fare, but it was very enjoyable, and isn't this what we are trying to do?Entertain the people..it doesn't claim to be Hedda Gabler,or try to be South Pacific, but it is Gershwin, and ENJOYABLE....and mostly,Janie Dee is just delightful..she is the quintessence of musical comedy greatness..but like everything, the performance must have a strong book, and this doesn't...but....Janie is just wonderful.......go to see the show, and bring your heavy heart,or sadness, or happy heart,as it were, and let these people entertain...the show will do just this!Susan Mills - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Well if you want deep intellectual theatre and social significance go and see something else. If you just want to chill out to some great songs, well delivered by Dee and Flavin this is a great night out. Ok - so it isn`t the most extravagant show, and the direction and choreography are only so -so, but it is FUN and the tap dancing clerics are great. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Great show. The best new show to come along for a long time. The humour was well balanced and the production was polished and well presented. The Gershwin numbers were well interpreted and the combination of the dance routines and music made it impossible to keep your feet still. Orchestra was also first class. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

I totally agree with WOS review. This is an awful (not to mention "awkward") production. The singing was weak and the set horrible (again, horrible!). How did it get to put on West End? I simply cannot grasp! - USER: Whatsonstage.com

I paid £19 for an indifferent seat for an indifferent production of My One and Only.
On Saturday afternoon I had a good seat at the Royal Opera House to see Darcey Bussell dancing in La Bayadere. Cost? Just £15.

Fabulous as Janie Dee is, even she couldn't set light to this damp (indeed waterlogged!) squib of a production. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

We get the theatre we deserve, and if this awful production has gotten good reviews elsewhere -- though not, commendably, here on this site -- then we deserve what we get. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Wow, I'm quite amazed by Mark Shenton's damning review. I was also at the opening of My One and Only last night, and while I wouldn't say I disagree with everything he says, I do think it's harshly put. No the orchestrations didn't do the music justice, no the book wasn't great and the parts weren't big or strong enough for the wonderful talents of Janie Dee and Jenny Galloway in particular. (Tim Flavin had a big role, but while I appreciate his dancing ability, I'm not convinced by his star quality - it's pretty low wattage - and he's just too 'gee-whiz'ish here.) But I didn't *not* enjoy it, and I actually quite like Lez Brotherston's art deco set and some of the tap dance numbers and the winged Rhythm boys were very smooth and funny. In general, I was underwhelmed but not overly disappointed. My One and Only is just a bit of escapist fun and I think there's definitely an audience for it.

A delightful show. Music- sensational, choreography-w onderful, set- beautiful. One thing though- the wonderful Janie Dee is a)too old for the part, and b)underused! This is the kind of show london needs..escapist fun...go go go!! - USER: Whatsonstage.com

saw it the other night..... an elegant, wonderfully choreographed show.... tits and teeth!! just the kind of show london needs at the moment. I hope it gets good reviews and more theatregoers hear about it coz its a really enjoyable show. The script is dodgy but those Gershwin songs are wonderful. Tim Flavin and Janie dee make a wonderful lead couple...the 'S'Wonderful' dance in the water is classic...... GREAT FUN...... - USER: Whatsonstage.com

A friend took me to the Matinee of My One and Only unexpectidly today... wasn't really planning to see it becaue I didn't fancy the show - but I am so glad I did go.. It is really lovely - sends you out onto the street feeling great about life - really. It is the story of a famous channel swimmer and a man who wants to be the first to fly from New York to Paris.. It is very very funny with a really "tongue in cheek" book that is very inventive. It has excellent dance routines and loads of marvelous songs. Can't recommend it highly enough... Heard an American guy on the way out saying "They really should take that to New York". - USER: Whatsonstage.com

I saw the show last night (Friday). Someone came on stage before it started and announced that they'd had a fire in the costume room on Tuesday and most of the costumes had been either damaged or destroyed. They've been working round the clock to get going again, and it all looks great. Well done to them for that. My only complaint would be the sound design. When there was a soloist singing it was so soft that it sounded like just another part of the orchestration. Tim Flavin's words were often lost, and even in the chorus numbers I was straining to hear. I overheard one of the sound guys during the interval saying they've had problems setting up at the Piccadilly, so maybe it's just a preview thing. Still, always good to see Mykal Rand on stage, and Richard Calkin's tap-dancing bishop was brilliant! - USER: Whatsonstage.com
