One of the best musicals Ive seen in a long time. Exciting and sad - a full spectrum of emotion crammed into about two hours of energetic singing and dancing. I loved every mintue of it! - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Not seen this site before but wish i had have done before now... Well all there is to say that Closer to Heaven was such a truly and wonderful piece of theatrical showpiece i have ever seen, well done to Johnathan Harvey and Pet Shop Boys! I saw this show 5 times and left me wanting more and more everytime it came to a terrific end! It's should have been promoted more to give it the full credit it deserved. The whole show was packed with wit, humour, saddness and great music and dancing all supported by a great and wonderful friendly cast. I myself isn't gay and i wouldn't of said it was directed towards a gay audience. Shame the show came to a closure as and when it did, but fingers crossed full a speedy return should plans go ahead for a tour in faraway places....Hail Neil Tennant & Chris Lowe and the wonderful talented Johnathan Harvey.... For those who didn't get to see the musical go and by the cast album, well worth a listen....10 out of 10 for me.... I truly miss it big time and all of the people i had met whilst this show was in production - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Great stuff. Went a week after the miserable experience of Mother Clap at the NT and it cheered me up no end. Lovely music, funny writing, spirited playing and dancing. Nothing profound, but very enjoyable. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

When I read the WoS review I thought he must have gone through the wrong door and ended up in a different theatre. This was brilliant and thank god it wasn't anything like an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Frances Barber is magnificent ably supported by Richard Roe (understudying the Straight Dave role) and Stacey Roca. Don't pay any attention to the reviews and go see Closer to Heaven, you wont regret it. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

I loved it together with a mostly gay audience (I'm not) who also, judging by the laughter and aplause, thought it was brillian too! The voices were superb, as was the dancing and Billie ... very very funny! I've recommended it to EVERYBODY!! - USER: Whatsonstage.com

I agree with the WOS reviewer. Plotless, thoughtless, tuneless, careless and often blandly insulting. Avoid with a capital A. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

watched this show last night and it was the best night out i've had in ages. the script is hilarious, the music beautiful, in true pet shop boys style and the performances, with no exceptions were outstanding! - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Brilliant sets and lighting and even better performances. The music is really powerful as arelte lyrics when they need to be. The book could be a little better but the one liners and characterisation keep you wanting to find out what might happen next. I highly recommend it! - USER: Whatsonstage.com

The show is not for everyone; I absolutely loved it. If you like Pet Shop Boys and club music and the club scene in general, you will love it. If you don't, see something else. I'm back in NYC now, but can't wait to see it again next time I'm in London. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Oh dear, where do we start?
"Closer To Heaven" could be brilliant - but not without a severe rewrite and possibly some re-casting.
The plot is so thin you could strain tea through it. It's kind of boy-meets-girl-decides-he-prefers-boys-meets-boy instead. The boy in question is Straight Dave. "There's no irony in the name" he asserts at one point. But of course there is, it's telegraphed from the off. Where you really notice that there have been problems in putting the story together for this is when contrasting the first and second halves. The first is fairly strong with some occasionaly pithy and funny lines, most of which are delivered by the brilliant Frances Barber as Billie Trix - who pretty much carries the show in places. The second half on the other hand is lame - so lame you are tempted to shoot it and put it out of its misery. Characters and relationships are left sadly under or badly written. We are supposed to believe that the by now not-quite-so-Straight Dave is in love with Mile End Lee. Sorry, but this is not written well enough to convince.
The descent in to cliche tumbles into dialogue and song. The songs incidentaly are no surprise to Pet Shop Boys fans, but lack the lyrical and melodic richness consistent with keeping West End audiences entertained ad infinitum. Andrew Lloyd Webber was at the first night and although R.U.G are involved in this, he must surely have smiled inwardly at the sheer lack of competition to his West End reign.
From a performance point of view, Paul Keating is adequate as Straight Dave but despite having aquitted himself reasonably well in Tommy, still, for this critic, lacks presence and certainly in this production, conviction. Or maybe the intrinsic danger of casting as powerful actress as Ms Barber shows up other less able cast members in their true light. An example? Mile End Lee, a rough raggedy drug dealer, goes from East End "geezer" to beautifully well spoken light tenor when he sings - attention detail would be nice, once in character, stay in character please.
Maybe with a rewrite it could work; maybe with a little more attention to some performances it could work.
"Closer To Heaven" is light at best, flawed certainly, and God only knows what it would have been like without Frances Barber. It won't stand the test of time. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Okay loved this show... loved most of the characters.. I enjoyed the fact that it takes chances.. loved many of the songs with standouts "Vampire" and "For all of us"... the dancing is inventive and memorable (just how good was the opening of act 2!!)...
Critics mostly hate it ..what a surprise... with few exceptions they are not the target audience...One surprise however was that Nicolas De Jongh gave it an unexpectedly positive review... and quite rightly praised it's daring at doing something different... Thanks to the PSBs and Mr Harvey for not giving us a greatest hits show in the style of Mamma Mia.. they would have made a fortune with that... sadly can't see this appealing to the mainstream, and so will probably close much sonner than it deserves...
Cheers, Lee. - USER: Whatsonstage.com

Although a cliche, this truly is an exciting musical. When the first note starts, one can easily identify PSB's trademark. The cast is terrific (especially Mr. Paul Keating), the set is unique, and the costume is outragerous. For people (not necessarily gay) who love something funny, sexy, and trashy, this is the one!

A damn good show! It offers the chance for younger people who don't normally go to the theatre to see a musical with music that is normally found in clubland - which is what Closer to Heaven is all about. It's honest, raw, funny and very sad, all rolled into one, and the only musical to show a gay love scene in a bed! Well done Jonathan Harvey and the Pet Shop Boys ... it definitely is something you will never see on stage again for a while. - USER: Whatsonstage.com
