starstarstarstarstarwent to the show in Wimbledon yesterday-absolutely brilliant, great cast, especially Norman Bowman as Tony, great orchestra-what a show! - USER: Whatsonstage.com30 Nov 01
starstarstarstarstarAlso saw the show in Bournemouth and would say that the current tour is way above previous ones. The cast perform really well as do the orchestra. And the dancing is ab-fab!!!!! - USER: Whatsonstage.com22 Nov 01
starstarstarstarstarI saw the show in Aberdeen and thought it was fantastic! I can't believe some of the negative points people have said. I disagree. - USER: Whatsonstage.com20 Nov 01
starstarstarstarstarSaw West Side in Bournemouth and thought the show absolutely FANTASTIC. What a cast! The principles are convincing and the Jets & Sharks are SUPERB! Loved the 'Officer Krupke' number, which made everyone laugh. The dancing and acting was brilliant, wonderful singing, and what an orchestra!. What more could one ask for! Much better than when I saw it on the last tour, which I didn't enjoy. - USER: Whatsonstage.com06 Nov 01
starstarstarstarstarRe last review - saw it in Eastbourne and really really fantastic!! - USER: Whatsonstage.com03 Oct 01

starstarstarThe show is worth seeing if it comes to a theatre near you,but I would not travel far to see it. I find it highly amusing that in the duet 'Tonight' Maria's (Celia Graham)voice sounds far stonger than Tony's (Norman Bowman). In fact she even manges to drown him out in a few notes( which is a blessing if you ask me). Now that's girl power at its best... In general though I do think the cast is full of talented performers. However, what does one expect when it is a professional tour? - USER: Whatsonstage.com30 Aug 01
starstarI saw the show in Bath also ,but thought the entire performance lacked energy. The performers all definately need more enthusiasm! I felt like telling them all to WAKE UP BECAUSE I'VE PAID GOOD MONEY! Anita was the only one worth watching, and as for the guy who played Riff , his acting ability was superb, but vocally he sounded as though he couldn't handle the range that is required to play such a demanding role.Definately not the stongest west side cast I've ever seen... starstarstarstarstarCan not understand why the WOS review is so cutting. I saw the show recently in Bath and thought that it was really excellent - especially the dance numbers. More please!!! - USER: Whatsonstage.com28 Aug 01
starstarHave to disagree with the last comment - I too saw the show in Woking and felt it lacked energy and would question the quality of some of the vocal performances. Anita, however, was by far the strongest performer - and deserved her applause. The rest of the cast tried hard - but could do better! - USER: Whatsonstage.com28 Aug 01
starstarstarstarstarSaw the show in Woking - brilliant. Hi Paul Telegram Sam - USER: Whatsonstage.com28 Aug 01
starstarstarstarit's suprising to see such a mixed review! But I agree with the person who said that the beauty of live theatre is that it's different every day! I have seen this year's tour several times and know that some performances did run smoother than others! On a good day this show deseves 5,but even on a not so good day it still desreves at least a 3... - USER: Whatsonstage.com23 Aug 01

starstarstarstarstarI don't think that you can say that the leads were good but that's only what you'd expect--how many times have you gone to the theatre and the lead has been a huge disappointment? So when you see a show that has all the lead characters played by talented and enthusiastic actors and who are supported by a great deal of talent not only in the minor parts but with a wonderful orchestra as well then you have to give credit where it is due -go and see this show if it comes near you-or travel a bit as it really is worth it. - USER: Whatsonstage.com22 Aug 01
starstarstarstarstarSeen the show 3 times and loved every minute. The beauty of live theatre is that every performance is different to a greater or lesser degree and therefore there will always be someone who will something to criticise. Be real - are we all 1000% perfect in our jobs every day!!!??? - USER: Whatsonstage.com21 Aug 01
starI agree with the 'What's on stage'review! In fact I think the 'WOS' review has been too kind! Celia Graham and Norman Bowman both potray convincing lead roles, but then this is obviously expected! As for the viewers who say it is the minor principleswho carry the show,i'm afraid I beg to differ! With exception to A rab ( Nic Croseley) and Glad Hand(Mr Cotton) , I feel none of the minor principles have any acting ability at all. Everyting all sounds so 'read'.This may have to do with the fact that the majority of the cast have trained in Dance as opposed to Acting. However, even their dance ability fails to impress me. The show looks tired and all the dancing, particulary in 'Cool', has lost it's slick appeal! - USER: Whatsonstage.com16 Aug 01
starstarstarstarstarjust seen WSS in York--super cast,brilliant music,very memorable production. - USER: Whatsonstage.com05 Aug 01
starstarstarstarstarSeen the show in Sunderland and thought it was very good. A far stronger cast than last year's tour! - USER: Whatsonstage.com24 Jul 01

starstarstarstarstarYeah,I agree Norman Bowman does deserve a mention because he does have a lovely voice, but what makes him such a convincing Tony is that he really looks the part. Although,I do agree with everyone who says it is the minor principles and Anita who 'carry the show'. Don't get me wrong Maria ,Celia Graham, does have an excellent singing voice. But im my opinion it is the Jet Boys who carry this show...and of course Riff(the leader) Julian Essex Spurrier - USER: Whatsonstage.com23 Jul 01
starstarstarstarstarI think Norman Bowman as Tony deserves a mention,he has a lovely voice, well suited to Maria and Somewhere and his acting skills have to be mentioned too-his anguish at realising he has killed Bernardo, his friend Riff is dead and then believing Maria has been killed are played with great emotion and contrast beautifully with the light hearted scene at the dress shop.Emma Clifford as Anita is quite outstanding in the part and I look forward to seeing her also in other productions in the future. - USER: Whatsonstage.com18 Jul 01
starstarstarstarI agree with the reviewer on 28/6 who said that the principals were weak and the ensemble made it worth watching. I saw the show on tour in '97, in London in '99 and on tour last year, and some of the current principals (primarily the Americans; the Puerto Ricans are better) are the weakest of the lot. The ensemble, however, is the strongest WSS ensemble I've seen. - USER: Whatsonstage.com10 Jul 01
starstarstarI think the set really does need a face lift.It makes the show look tired! - USER: Whatsonstage.com28 Jun 01
starstarstarstarSaw the show in Birmingaham also and have to say thanks to the minor principles and the well played band, I very much enjoyed it! However, unfortunetly I did not exactly find the Principles a pleasure to watch( Tony,Riff and Maria) ,with exception to Anita ( Emma Clifford), who did manage to excell throughout the entire production! The principles came across as being no more than 'average' performers who lacked both charisma and enthusiasm! it is definately the supporting principles who carry the show. This is evident in the song 'Officer Krupke',where I found myself and the entire cast in roars of laughter. So a big thumbs up to -Action,A-rab,Baby John etc -it's thanks to you guys that this show is worth seeing or even mentioning! - USER: Whatsonstage.com28 Jun 01
starstarstarstarstarBirmingham. 23 June. Wonderful to have the opportunity to see the show as originally produced. True, there could be stronger vocal performances but the band crackles with energy and the music and dance and story all work and transcend the limited presence of some of the players. If you are sated with high quality musical theatre stay at home but if, like me, a trip to the theatre is a rare treat, you will not be disappointed. This is a great show. ENJOY. - USER: Whatsonstage.com24 Jun 01
starstarstarstarI would not say the Leads were all that strong. However, the minor principles were excellent. In particular, look out for the boy who plays A-rab ( Nic Crossely). Almost certainly going to be a big name in the future!! NEW THEATRE ,HULL - USER: Whatsonstage.com29 May 01
starstarstarstarstarTonight tonight ..you must see the show tonight! Ab fab performance by all!!!! - USER: Whatsonstage.com22 May 01
starstarstarstarstaroops!re comments on 22/5/01-I meant to give it 5 stars not 4.This show is well worth full quota of stars-go see it!-Elaine - USER: Whatsonstage.com22 May 01
starstarstarstarI think this was the review that appeared in the Edinburgh Evening News;a review of the same show at the same theatre appeared in the Scotsman saying that'a hugely enthusiastic ensemble throws itself into the show's youthful frenzy without once throwing the focus or missing the subtle changes of mood evoked by Bernstein's score.'I thought there was a vibrant energy in this production, the choreography- particularly in the fight scenes- was brilliantly done and the leads were, without exception, brilliant.Perhaps the guy who wrote the review printed here had been kept late at his office, missed his tea and really wasn't in the mood to go to the theatre.Or perhaps he doesn't know a really well performed musical when he sees it unfold in front of him? - USER: Whatsonstage.com22 May 01
starstarstarI did not find the entire cast as strong as previous productions of West Side story, but I did enjoy it all the same. The choreography was very slick in the opening fighting scene and thought it was ver well done. Anita was very strong , however! - USER: Whatsonstage.com14 May 01
starstarstarstarstarI can't believe! I take it the person who branded the amatuer production as 'better' is an apollo player themself, and as for the person who said the set needed a face lift..Hello! What are you on about? The whole point of West Side Story is the actual performance, not the Setting! Everything in West Side has to remain the same! It is all 'set in stone' and originates from the original performance.Which means the script, choreography and setting 'All' have to remain the same. I found the show highly enjoyable. I went to see it twice i fact! - USER: Whatsonstage.com14 May 01
starWell I have to say that I have see much better west side stories, this one seemed very lacklustre and dull, especially for a show which should be so fast paced and exciting. Boring! Much inferior to the production I saw in Glasgow the week earlier - this from an amateur company which I heard wowed the audiences during the week run, this company could certainly teach the professional touring production a thing or two! This production was slick, full of the right emotions in the right places, with an extremely talented cast (full of names to look out for), what a pity that so many more people would have gone to see the touring production in Edinburgh and have been disapointed when The Apollo Players in Glasgow had a far better West Side Story on offer. - USER: Whatsonstage.com13 May 01
starI agree with the WOS review. I saw the show last year and it looked tired. None of the lead actors had strong voices and I expected the dancing to be much better, and the sets needed a facelift. - USER: Whatsonstage.com04 May 01
starstarstarstarstarI have to say I disagree with the 'wos' review. After going to se the show,I have to say I highly enjoyed it.The choreography, though changed, was amazing!!Tony(Norman bowman) and Maria(Cecil graham) were excellent!v I would recommend this to anyone who has a love for musical theatre...
