starstarstarMaybe I caught it on a slow night (theatre only 40% sold) but this struck me as a brilliant idea which had somehow not quite followed through in every detail. As the Mandelson creature, Henry Goodman is precise and works hard to ensure consistency and keep the laughter rolling, but the play flattens apallingly whenever the awful Amita Dhiri comes on stage. I think the part is badly written by a total mysoginist, unless the failure is wholly in her unattractive acting, but the result is deadening. Similarly what IS it about Peter Capaldi that disables him from portraying normal people ... there's always something creepy about his stage and film presences that undermines the performance. It's offputting, which is a pity because it's a great part and he could have some of the best moments in the play. I think it needs a rest, and a fresh injection of topicality when the revival sets off on tour, or there's another election due ... (JH) - USER: Whatsonstage.com18 Oct 01
starstarstarstarFunniest play we have seen since Stones in his Pockets. Definitely worth going to see. - USER: Whatsonstage.com15 Aug 01
starWhat's the fuss? I thought it a total waste of time. - USER: Whatsonstage.com02 Jul 01
starstarstarFunny but often frustrating. Erratic writing and performance styles derail a potentially first-class satire. - USER: Whatsonstage.com23 May 01
starstarstarFirst act very good but the early promise wasn't carried into the final acts. Entertaining but only an average score. - USER: Whatsonstage.com09 May 01
starstarstarFarce, satire, biting, thoughtful. Feelgood is all of those things, but not sufficiently rounded as a play to be regarded as a classic. The play is far too slow to begin with. More obvious gags are required to begin with to allow the audience to relax into the performance. Henry Goodman deservedly gets the most laughs, but many times the play pulls back from full blown farce just when it needs it most. This is most obvious when a comedian, engaged as a script writer, enters the plot. The entrance is really well done, but then throughout the rest of the play, when he could have been used a vehicle for jokes, he's left on the sidelines. Nigel Planer plays a good role as a Lord Falconer type figure, but needed to be even more hapless to get more laughs. Amita Dhiri, a very talented actress, was wasted as a flat, one dimensional character. A sexual kink, or an emotional wreck, behind the efficient PA, would have helped to develop and balance the plot. There were some serious points made in the play about politics and power. The trouble is they were sprinkled in at seemingly random moments. Basically, it would have worked much better if the farce had been built up, and then blown apart again with the serious points towards the end. Feelgood has some nice performances and good lines. It unfortunately lacks the structure and flair needed to make it a truly outstanding play. - USER: Whatsonstage.com27 Apr 01
starstarstarstarstarA good British political satire is a very rare thing. One as good as this is rarer still. The acting is superb, the writing hilarous and the gags are very contemporary. In a West End stuffed with musicals, Noel Coward revivals and "Star" vehicles. This is what theatre is all about. New writing, great acting and excellent plot. - USER: Whatsonstage.com27 Apr 01
starstarstarstarstarSaw it at Hampstead - very funny and well acted. Go see it in the West End! - USER: Whatsonstage.com09 Apr 01
