starAwful, self-indulgent and without any positive points. Have been a huge fan of Kneehigh for my many years but will never go to another production. A script without any wit or depth, music without any context and subtelty and performances that a school production would be ashamed of. It was a perfect example of style over substance and one of the worst productions I've seen in a long time. If plays offered refunds, I'd demand one. - Tom, London20 Apr 09
starDisappointingly Kneehigh add nothing and subtract almost everything from the DJ myth. The staging is 70s grot and did wee need a neon sign showing HELL at the finale. I'd been in hell for most of the production. Bring back their clearsightedness of the Bacchae and early creation. Somebody had better tell Emma she's lost it. - Jeremy Baker15 Apr 09
starstarstarI've been following the highly creative Kneehigh for a while, during which time I've been priviledged to have seen gems like The Bacchae, Tristan & Yseult and Brief Encounter. A few years back the resources they have here would have been a mere dream. The old Battersea Town Hall has been specially re-configured and two bars set up and the set is enormous, using the prosenium with a large platform in front. There's a 4-piece band playing an original soundtrack, four dancers and a cast of eight. Yet, the play - a 70's setting of Don Juan / Don Giovanni - isn't really worth it. The period is created perfectly, right down to the underpants!, there is the usual inventiveness (thought ideas are re-cycled) but in the end the narrative drive and the writing just aren't good enough. As much as I approve of the NT, RSC et al rushing to embrace them, I'm beginning to wonder if we're losing the essence of Kneehigh in the process. Small may well be beautiful after all. - Gareth James11 Apr 09
