starstarWhat a dissapointment..I have seen better a my local theatre performed by local talented youngsters... Jeremiah James was hardly strong enough for the title role and his "accent" was questionable to say the least. Leslie Garrett was not there once again, doing Loose Women I think!! It is hardly suprising the theatre was full of empty seats..and the lady next to us only paid £10 for hers in the stalls row D... The uncomfortable coughing from the audience at times drowned out the somewhat weak cast..with only a few exceptions... Poor Poor Poor...No wonder that the west end theatre is strugling, and it has nothing to do with the Credit Crunch! - Dean Willoughby15 Apr 09
starstarstarSaw the understudy for Billy Bigelow, Derek Hagen, today at matinee. His acting was brilliant and vocally he is also fine. What a magnetic stage presence. A worthy partner for Alexandra Silber's luminous, steadfast Julie. "Julie never changes." I too was at the National Theatre's performance years ago. The design of the present revival cannot match Bob Crowley's legendary work. That said, Dudley's vision shows some intriguing coups de theatre and homages to Andrew Wyeth and Hopper, as well as being creative itself. Like Midsummer Night's Dream or Macbeth, Carousel is so intrinsically good that you have to be an idiot to mess it up. And this lot perform it creditably. I liked the support from the actors who played Jigger and Mrs Mullins. Exited crying my eyes out and missing me dad. And that's the test of a good "Carousel." - Elizabeth05 Apr 09
starstarstarstarstarThrilling from beginning to end, especially Jeremiah James. Although the end involved suspending reality, being in heaven meant seeing Jeremiah again and hearing his wonderful voice. I saw a Thursday matinee in January and Leslie Garrett was not in that particular show so cannot comment on her performance. Without exception, I have never seen such excellent singing and dancing all at once on the same stage. The young cast were mesmerising at times. - Rosemary Morrison24 Mar 09
starstarstarstarexceeded my expectations.The whole cast were absolutely excellant. Was particilarly impressed with Jeremiah James soliloquy which was sung and acted brilliantly. starstarstarstarI've fond memories of Nicholas Hytner's NT production so I was a bit concerned it might be a hard act to follow, but it isn't. The problem with the show itself is that it becomes silly, sweet and sickly in the second half when the action moves to heaven! It's a shame, because it's got some great music and, in this production, the design and choreography are great - and I've rarely been to a musical that was so well sung, with a chorus that must be second to none, and which is not under or over amplified. starstarstarstarstarI loved Carousel. Without the aid of a big tv programme, it is always a risk putting on a major West End musical but Carousel exceeds expectations. Two dazzling performances from the unknown leads (Alexander Silber should get an Olivier nomination) and a cracking storyline had me enthralled from start to finish. I also liked Lesley Garrett and really don't understand the criticism from certain quarters. Who wants a frumpish, traditional Nettie rather than Lesley's fabulous singing and sprightly verve? The visual impact is superlative and the choreography imaginative and innovative. Moreover, What's The Use of Wond'rin and If I Loved You didn't leave a dry eye in the house. If you are a fan of true musical theatre (not the cheap and nasty jukebox things)Carousel is not to be missed. p.s. JohnnyFox has me in stictches. Priceless. - DJ16 Jan 09
starstarI agree to an extent about the show looking dated, but it might be this revival that brings that about. It's unfortunate when a production keeps being compared to previous well-known ones, but even on its own I don't think this one cuts it. There was something very limp about the whole thing, some kind of spark missing. The only performance to make me take notice was Alexandra Silber who sang & performed well and is also very cute. I pitied her having to be sung at by Garrett doing her warbling, shrieking You'll Never Walk Alone. Otherwise, performances were dull - and accents in particular were, in some cases, cringe-inducing. Back projections rarely work - no deviation from that here. Still, it seems to please some people and I saw some audience members dabbing at their eyes so it's hitting the mark to an extent. - Sycamore Flint12 Jan 09
starstarstarstarI went on Saturday Night and overall was very impressed. the Whole cast were exceptional although I feel lesley Garrett Maybe Doesnt belong inn musicals I thought she acted her way throguh this much better than in the sound of music. I love this show so coudlnt wait to see this production after the recent wonderful production of fiddler on the roof i was sure i wouldnt be dissapointed and i wasnt for the whole. Alexander Silber as usual is phenomenal Her strong loud soprano is something very rare theese days in the west end and jeremiah james just wonderful. The thing i found hard to get a grip on was the design. Costumes were wonderful but again i felt the projection excellent at somepoints and then cheap at others unlike the woman in white at least this show had some scenery but i just felt it was over used and although very good it just disctratced from the peice and doesnt work well in a live theatrical situation. i thought the backgrounds were very clever but the boat leaving thwe island back to the docks and the going up to the heavens was just tacky and pointless and actually took my mind away from the peice. overall a wonderful production with great chroeography great dirwection and an outstanding cast of great singers and dancers and actors simply wonderful - Joshua Bird06 Jan 09
starstarstarstarSaw it last night, thought it was very good overall (though I agree it didn't match up to the 1992 National Theatre revival, which I also saw). One point which many reviews (here and in the press) have made is that the show somehow portrays domestic violence as being acceptable. This is clearly not the case - everyone in the show except Julie expresses their disapproval of it, and Julie only accepts it because of her feelings for Billy - which is exactly the sort of excuse which real-life victims of domestic violence regularly give. So the show is actually expressing social realism, rather than being an apologia for domestic violence. - gs24 Dec 08

starI wouldn't go as far to say that Leslie Garrett is an ex-third rate opera singer ( maybe an ex-second rate opera singer ). But her acting skill hasn't improved since The Sound of Music maybe it's time she really thinks of joining an acting course if she wants to do more musicals! - an audience point of view07 Dec 08

starstarstarI used to think that Carousel, like Man of La Mancha, was memorable mainly for one great song. Lindsay Posner's production does not entirely convince me otherwise. The storyline is a bit dull, songs and dance routines go on a bit too long, and there is very little humour apart from Lauren Hood's delightful Carrie. One sentiment, that being hit by someone you love doesn't hurt so that makes it acceptable, is risible. For such a long show the ending feels rushed and unsatisfactory. What Carousel does have going for it is some exceptionally fine singing, possibly the best ensemble I have heard. In this exceptional company, unlike The Sound of Music, Lesley Garrett fits in seamlessly, even if some of her acting didn't. Incidentally, Bill Kenwright was in the audience (with ALW) and it would be interesting to know what the chairman of Everton FC made of such spine-tingling renditions of the Liverpool anthem, You'll Never Walk Alone, restored to their proper context. - David Baxter04 Dec 08

starstarstarstarstarLeslie Garrett was magnificent. Her rendition of 'You'll never walk alone' was not only a fantastic and very moving performance with exactly the right amount of pathos but also a technical triumph for any singer. It was lke attending a Master Class in how to perform a well known song and yet keep it fresh and meaningful. Over and above that her stage presence gave the whole show the gravitas that it deserved and her body language towards the rest of the cast and theirs towards her showed what a great team they all are. Alexandra Silber was great too and I'm sure that with more experience she's destined for even greater things in the future. Carousel has not been, until now, one of our favourite musicals but this performance, setting aside our natural prejudice because you held the baton, has brought it up our placings list considerably. Great show, great night, wonderful to be with you and Eileen and thanks once again. - James Adam03 Dec 08
