starstarstarstarOn the 24th December eight of us attended a performance of Horrid Henry live and horrid at the Trafalgar Studios. The play was approximately 2 hours long with a fifteen minute interval in the middle. It was based around the Horrid Henry series by Francesca Simon which is hugely popular in England and the UK. The play is about Henry and his adventures as a boy and adventures meaning day to day things like going for a sleepover, playing football and tricking his younger brother Perfect Peter into believing he can time travel. The play is presented from Henry’s point of view which makes it even more enjoyable because you know what he is thinking. A lot of energy is iven out and two actors play Henry so he can be at different places at different times. There was not a huge host of cast so all of them did double up except for Henry, but you could hardly tell the difference and younger children didn’t even notice. Henry is a trouble maker, clumsy and rough – voiced boy who hates his brother, Peter for always doing what he is told and being perfect – just like his name. The names, such as ‘Moody Margaret’, ‘Sour Susan’ and ‘Aerobic Al’ really brought out their characters which made the play even more amusing. Certain catchphrases such as ‘Oh Henry!’, ‘Don’t be horrid Henry!’, ‘It’s not fair!’ and the most famous one ‘Na na nee nah naaaaaa!’ really got the children in the audience going. Another great thing about it was that it was that sometimes the Horrid Henry’s came out into the audience and the children around me really enjoyed that. The trademark clothes such as Henry’s blue jumper with yellow stripes are recognizable to the children from the books so they were able to link things together. My favourite part of the play was at the end when the rock band came out and Henry was playing with them because it showed that Henry was really enjoying himself and the children in the audience enjoyed it a lot too. I went because my younger brother and his friend who were 9 at the time wanted to go and watch it and they enjoyed it very much as you can see by their comments below. ‘Great for the Kids’ ‘Henry was very funny and just like in the book and Perfect Peter was so small and so cute! All the characters didn’t seem grown – up, they just looked like normal kids which was amazing because the acting skills were amazing’ ‘Wicked’ ‘It was really cool and funny because it was like the book’ ‘The stage was alight and so lively that even I enjoyed it. I mainly went for my son, but it was a great panto. I especially liked Horrid Henry – he acted excellently!’ ‘It was very loud and good for children’ ‘I would love to see it again ‘ - Anandi16 Feb 09
