starstarstarI was pleasantly surprised by this show, it's really not as bad as some reviews suggest. The cast are terrific as is the orchestra and there are plenty of enjoyable moments. The running time is now about 2 hours and 40 minutes. The infamous projected animations, are, however, unforgiveable-absolutely atrocious-they add zero to the show and take up far too much of the stage. Luckily I was sitting near the front of the stage and for the most past was able to ignore them and concentrate on the wonderful performers instead. Whilst the acting is top notch, the production value are definitely "am-dram"-particular low points were the Twister and ..ahem...transformation from Kansas to Oz (this consisted of an endlessly revolving stage and a lot of dry ice and those awful cartoon projections), the Wizard (more of the same but with a green shower curtain!) and probably worst of all, the appearance of the Emerald City which is laugh-out-loyd atrocious. A great shame for the very talented cast. However, myself and two friends still left feeling entertained and snging the songs. It's worth a visit as long as you don't expect spectacle as you sure as hell won't get that! - Richard Kiddle17 Aug 08
starstarstarGreat cast - I really think the dynamic worked and I really liked Dorathy and the straw man. Also great to hear a large band playing the music - definitely a great show to listen to. Now for the negatives - WHAT was going on visually?! The design was just frankly apalling, the choreography lame and I have no idea what was going on with the Emerald City - there is something ironic about Dorathy saying "it's beautiful" as a squiggle appears on a screen! That toilet cubicle the wizard hides in is just awful as well - and why does it move around the stage. All in all just visually apalling - go blindfolded and this is definitely 5 stars however. Open your eyes and it all falls apart... - AA17 Aug 08
starstarstarI enjoyed the production. Fun and different. However they could have dropped the American accents a little and just concentrated on the acting. Dorothy was often quite nauseating. Loved gary Wilmott in fact the tin man and scarecrow were excellent. The kids and all dancers were full of energy. Orchestra brilliant. And Toto the dog...although he looked a bit tired and thirsty by the end ! ! - Sue14 Aug 08
starThe worst production of this how I have ever seen - Wayne 11 Aug 08
starstarstarstarDid I see a different show to everyone else? Maybe not very sophisticated fun, but a lot of fun nonetheless. - Sarah11 Aug 08
starstarstarI saw the final preview matinee with a small group of friends and thoroughly enjoyed it. There were plenty of children in the audience obviously having a positive experience. I think the critics have missed the point of the 'scribbly' projections. The witch, the bangs, the tornado and getting lost could be very scary and disturbing but the projections gave the feel of story book illustrations and drew the audience gently into that world. I have booked tickets to see it with my 5 year old grand-daughter. Yes, the star of the show was Toto! - Annette Budd10 Aug 08
starstarstarI don't know what all the fuss is about. I really liked it. - J Kelly05 Aug 08
starstarstarThe positives (for a change) are that a really talented cast put in some hard work: Hilton McRae, Adam Cooper and Gary Wilmot are all strong as the friends (Gary Wilmot is one of the most endearing Lion's you'll see. His King of the Forest a tour de force), Roy Hudd (when he can get his lines out) is perfect casting and Susannah Fellows is strong as Glinda. The orchestra are amazing and bring the beautiful score to life, the Munchkins are full of energy and very watchable, and the Ensemble (when they take it seriously - which clearly wasn't all the time) provide good support. But they can't escape from really terrible, uninspired direction that has all the sensitivity of a sledge hammer and possibly the most self-indulgent and ill-concieved design in London at the moment. The production limped through 3 hours (3 bloody hours!) and I was surrounded by people who just didn't care, and met the curtain calls with a wave of indifference. Why hasn't Jude Kelly addressed pace? All she has to do is tell people to speak faster but maintain clarity. Not that hard. The lines in Act One were declaimed as if they were being spoken from the top of Mount Olympus. And Sian Brooke's Dorothy is a problem as she is too busy playing being 15, instead of looking for simplicity. Again. Bad direction. But I didn't come out with my fists clenched. Just a bit sad that such a great show will suffer such a body blow to it's reputation. - Jack05 Aug 08

starstarstarOverall I enjoyed the show. Good singing, costumes and dog. The younger members of the audience didn't seem to mind the very loud bangs. Good family entertainment. - Sarah04 Aug 08
starDid you hear? The show has been caught red-handed posting positive reviews to the show on this very forum. It's easy to spot them though...they're the only decent comments in a sea of critiism and warnings not to bother seeing it yourself. By the way, did I mention - don't bother, it's completely pointless. - Huey Nhan03 Aug 08
starstarI took my family to see todays matinee...what a complete let down!!! The cast were disappointing apart from Mr Wilmot who managed to brighten the stage appearing as the lion after 80 minutes of boredom!!! Whoever designed the graphics should be shot!!! My 3 year old could have done a better job!! The final straw was the characters arriving at he emerald city just before the interval...a child like ridiculous drawing!!! What complete insult to an amazing film!!! It was so bad we decided not to return for the second half and choose to go for a wonderful meal to brighten our spririts!!! All i can say is...don't bother.. It is nothing but a glorified panto!!! The person who had the cheek to charge £32 for a ticket should be sacked!!! Absolutely Gutted!!!! - Michelle Butcher03 Aug 08
starAvoid, all the press is true, at 3 hours and with a Dorothy too old, too tall and who can not sing, in a tin pot set that never gets to Oz or the E City, this should not have been allowed to go on. How does Jude Kelly get away with it??? - jamie 31 Jul 08
starA very poor production. Show dragged and had no magic what so ever. Projections and set look like they had been thought pu of in about 10 mins. Only saving grace was the orchestra who made the score come alive - Terry30 Jul 08
starWrong venue, wrong Dorothy, insulting graphics and far too slow. The RFH is a concert hall not equipped for the required spectacle.Excellent period sound from orchestra however. - Sheffielder30 Jul 08
starVery poor. Many missed opportunities and horrendous projections. - Peter Huntley30 Jul 08
starstarstarstarstarGreat cast, great production as good as the MGM film ! - from an audience point of view30 Jul 08
starI was so dissapointed on the first night's performance. The sets were poor and backstage didn't work in time for the actors sometimes, but the worst bit of all was watching the embarrasing Roy Hudd, who sadly couldn't remember his lines and then tried the old pantomime corpse with Toto when he barked. Actually Toto was the star of the show, closely followed by Adam Cooper's excellent Tin Man, Gary Willmotts Lion and a good all round performance by Dorothy. I think the wicked witch forgot she was wicked! - Gary29 Jul 08
starstarDisappointingly bland production. Great orchestra and cast, let down by lazy staging. - Graham28 Jul 08
starI arrived at this show excited about what looked like quality theatre-- however, Dorothy's attempt at a 1939 Kansas accent was dreadful and ruined most of her lines for me. The set consisted almost exclusively of two-dimensional props set on a Drum Revolve, accompanied by a large screen that used what appeared to be drawings made on MS Paint in order to inform the audience on what was gonig on (for example-- when the Tin Man appeared, the screen lit up with the words "Chop, Chop" and a poorly drawn picture of an axe). Don't go see this play. I thought it would be great (how could anyone ruin The Wizard of Oz?), but I was sorely mistaken. - Lisa25 Jul 08
starstarstarToo long and drags in spots but still a winner for the kids. Good choreography, fine orchestra and Roy Hudd, always a winner. - John E Houx24 Jul 08
