This play is truly crap. From the annoying drones in the background that reminded me of a bad 80’s movie. To back lighting that did literally nothing except hurt my eyes. Hattie Morahan’s performance was awful to say the least, irreparably damaging my ears with her screeching voice. Benedict Cumberbatch is good, thank god. Amanda Hale tries hard, bless her, and I know what other reviewers would say. “That I didn’t get it”. THERE’S NOTHING TO GET! It’s layers of pointless pap, upon layers of meaningless, pointless pap. Don’t be fooled by the emperor’s cloths.
I felt this play was meant to be unsettling, but it not. It’s just plain irritating. Don’t waste your money or time.

I liked this show but wasn't sure just how much until I read the dangerously reactionary reviews of the right wing press. The play is challenging on the audience and thank God for that in a week when two more truly awful musicals hit the west end. It is a triumph for the hugely talented team topped with a searing performance from Benedict Cumberbatch and the writing is just....well take your brain along, you'll need it. Fantastic! - joesmith

I should say firstly that I have not been a great fan of Katie Mitchell in the past, but this astonishingly powerfull play by Martin Crimp has been directed with great flair by her and is a revelation. Stylishly staged by Vicki Mortimer it is a must see for anyone who loves to be challenged by theatre. The cast are uniformly excellent and each performance dovetails perfectly with the other to create a stunning whole. Well done to the Royal Court for staging Mr Crimps thought provoking play so well. - rds
