starstarstarstarThis is a very original and challenging play which creates a modern trial with both period witnesses such as Mary Magdalene and later ‘expert’ witnesses such as Sigmund Freud. It’s a thrilling production with some terrific performances. The arguments are well made and the contemporary setting and dialogue make them more accessible, but it loses some of its punch by elongating some scenes to the point where the play outstays its welcome by 30 minutes or so. You might expect the subject matter to result in something earnest, but the dialogue sparkles and it is often very funny. If only they’d pruned it a bit….. - Gareth James07 May 08
starstarstarHave to say I agree with James below. Some great stuff, but it doesn't exactly go anywhere and the last twenty minutes is almost impenetrable. Simon the Zealot and Pontius Pilate were standouts for me, but the acting was actually very good across the board. Definitely, the problems lie with the writing rather than the production. - Art8727 Apr 08
starstarstarstarstarWoooh! What a play! Brilliant writing, and just extraordinary acting (particularly by Pilate and Judas). I had had a very busy week and I was worried I may nod off in a dark theatre. But no, it was like a bucket of ice-cold Red Bull had been thrown in my face. My companion and I found ourselves discussing this for hours afterwards. Run to the box office now! - addicted to theatre12 Apr 08
starstarstar The acting was solid, as you will always find at the Almeida, and I always delight at seeing Rupert Goolds usual glorius mix of great vision and getting some great performances out of his cast. My problem however lies with the play. The ideas in the writing are great and there are some brilliant moments, but moments are taken over by boredom. It simply has too many ideas and too much material. It is a big subject but I cannot help but feel that Gurguis could have been helped by a director who was not afraid to bring out the cutting pen. Aside from that look out for Douglas Henshall who is simply amazing as Satan and Mark Lockyer joiusly comic as ever as the Greek prosecuter against Judas. - James10 Apr 08
starstarstarstarstarThere wasn't too much shouting. This was great stuff, deserves to be seen by wider audience. - Lynette04 Apr 08
