starstarstarstarstarJohn Doyle's brilliant direction of his final musical for the Watermill reveals the harsh and gritty realism of friendships gone sour, dreams forgotten and aspirations lost to time. I have been fortunate in seeing quite a few Merrilys over the years but this one has to be the best. Yes, the staging at the was a bit cramped, but there's not a lot they can do about that. The sheer force of the first act quite took my breath away and I am sure stunned a few memebers of the audience into the bargain, but it was a revelation and made the poignant second act final scene all the more intense. Brilliant - IT MUST GET A TRANSFER! - rds02 Mar 08
starstarstarstarIt doesn't work as well as Sweeny Todd or Mack & Mabel did here, but the musical standards are exceptional so this under-rated Sondheim score comes over very well indeed. They lose subtlety in the over-loud end of Act I, the stage is often rather cramped and the reverse chronology wasn't always clear (to the unititiated at least). Well worth a trip to Newbury though. - Gareth James02 Mar 08
starstarstarstarstarone of best things ive ever seen. the cast are superb and john doyle is one of our best directors. this show HAS to come to london - christian04 Feb 08
starstarstarIt's very like overhearing confessions from a psychiatrist's couch. Embarrassing, painful but ultimately nothing to do with me. Sam Kenyon and Rebecca Jackson are brilliant as usual but it's Sondheim at his most arid. Jeremyb - Jeremyb31 Jan 08
