Im not sure what those people giving this production a 1 or 2 star rating are expecting but they obviously were watching a different production to me! For the set design, costumes and music alone, it deserves a 3*! The set is mind boggling and an absolute triumph! Costumes are the usual stunning West End fair and the children were fantastic.
Summer Strallen was good and I was glad to see she brought her own interpretation to the role, rather then try to copy what Julie did in the film. There were lots of very funny bits, which you imagine Maria had in real life. Why else would 7 unruly children warm to her so much after chasing away numerous other governess's!
The Mother Abbess was outstanding and made me completely cry during her rendition of Climb Every Mountain! That is one powerful voice usued to blow the audience away.
The only thing that has stopped me giving the show 5 stars is the casting of the Captain and the direction of the relationship between him and Maria. Simon MacCorkindale is a wonderful actor on TV Im sure, but on stage, he was just 1-dimensional. He was an upright gruff Naval Captain and didnt budge from that characterisation throughout the whole performance. There was no sign of him becoming more mellow and glimpses of how he was in the past when his first wife was alive. And his relationship with Maria showed no spark whatsoever. Even when she held him at the end of Something Good, he still had his hands held behind his back which just looked awkward and uncomfortable. They also werent matched very well. He looked far too old for her youthfulness (not sure if this is a true reflection of the real age difference or not) but none of it felt realistic.
And the direction of that relationship was too hurried, leaving no time for the audience to get excited about the possibility of them getting together. At the start, she rubs him up the wrong way with rufusing to use the whistle, we then see him with the Baroness and the next minute Maria and the Captain are dancing and having a moment. I realise they cant fit in everything as the show can only run for a certain amount of time but I wouldve thought that this aspect was vital to the show and to people falling in love with these characters.
That aside, it was a very pleasant evening out with friends. We wish they couldve sung a song altogether for the curtain call, but instead, my friend and I had to fill in for them from the front of the Upper Circle!
For those who love a good show, I highly recommend it.

I watched the Sound of Music in June this year when Summer Strallen was on holiday. She conveyed the warmth and youthness that Maria should have and the vocals and acting were absolutely spotless. One thing I cannot get over though is how quickly she got changed; or also how quickly she got round the stage; in the wedding scene at the Abbey she went off stage left and about two seconds later came on centre stage, it was like lightning. The kids were good, especially the boys and Amy Lennox who played Liesl because there voices were strong and were able to carry the theatre, the other kids were good but at times I couldn't hear them properly. We had two understudies and they were The Captian and he was played by a Swing called Christopher Connah, I didn't really rate him that highly in singing as his voice was quite weird and his diction was bad when singing but as an actor he was quite good, aside from skipping round the stage when he got excited lol. The other understudy was Nadim Naaman who was really good in playing Rolf. Magaret Preece was brilliant her vocals were strong and absolutely flawless! She was able to carry the whole theatre, just one criticism though, they had her microphone on too loud at most points and it hurt your ears; when your voice is that strong you don't need to have you microphone that loud. The scenery was brilliant, as was the orchestra and the sets; my favourite being the hill. Over-all it was an amazing night out and a great show, I would definitely go and see it again, especially with Aoife. - Scott Godfrey

It's not a show to take children to, it is very slow and just not interesting enough. The audience were not the usual kind and seemed very accepting of the whole thing but I had the feeling that they might never had been to a theatre before and had booked tickets purely on the strength of the TV show 'Search for Maria'. I never recovered from Act 2 where what could have been one of the most action packed scenes, probably the most imortant scene had been ruined? The whole crux of the story hinges on the political situation in Austria with the Nazi takeover and Captain Von Trapps refusal to accept it. Why then in the escape scene, does the confrontation with eldest daughters boyfriend/telegram boy, turned Nazi not follow the film. I couldn't believe it when he let them all escape so easily?
What a copp out.
Generally all of the singing voices are weak, the cast seem tired and lack charisma. The only exception being the Mother Abbess whose singing just about saved the day. - quiller

I really do not understand the negative reviews here. I have been sceptical of the various TV hypes around this show and seen it twice (once with Connie, once with Summer) - both times more out of interest than excitement. I must say though that both times I have been really happy. I think this is a really beautiful production that just simply works.
There were things about Connie and Summers performances that I liked loads but I thought both were simply amazing in the role. Also; Maggie Preece - WOW!! Worth every star and every penny! - AA

Saw this a couple of days ago and it's better than it was when it first open but still weak. Summer Stallen is much better than Connie Fisher and bring some humour to the part. The children were good. There are many offers around these days so I'd recomend it only if you can get a discount. The show is not worth £60, but I got a great Stalls seat for £15. - Tanya

Paid in the hundreds for last-minute tickets, but worth every sing;e penny. Go see it, you'll love it! - Gordon

Superb. Summer Strallen is a billiant replacement to the slightly dull Connie Fisher. Thank You Summer! - Mo
01 Jun 08
Saw this on 3rd March and it's a whole new era for this show. Summer brings a snazzyness and more humour to the role of Maria which although excellently performed by Connie is refreshingly different now. The children were also brilliant. Would go again tomorrow but its mostly sold out...what does that tell you! - Tamara

Saw Connies last night and been on 4 occaisons before that .As ever each performance by Connie has been better than the one before,The last night was outstanding,Connie was cheered and applauded after every song she sang and deservedly so.For people to say she canot sing or act is ridiculous you dont get theatre goers awards and critics rewards for being rubbish - Carol Burridge

I really do not understand the negative reviews at all. I saw this on Connie Fisher's last night, and it was nothing short of astounding! Connie brought out new dimensions to the character of Maria that I didn't even realize were possible. She brought out a little rebelliousness under all the sweetness that I thought was incredibly refreshing. The other players that stood out to me as well were Margaret Preece (awesome voice!) as the Mother Abbess, Amy Lennox as Liesl and Simon Burke as the Captain (and he was particularly strong in his scenes with Connie). I wish Summer Strallen all the best, but she has a hard act to follow, that's for sure. I've seen several productions of this show, and Connie Fisher is the best Maria I have ever seen. - Emkay
29 Feb 08
So disappointed with the production. Absolutely no chemistry between Maria and the Captain (who looked like a bored Tony Blair)and what was Connie doing during one of the most emotional scenes - the Wedding? What bride goose-steps down the aisle? One of the few musicals I have ever seen that definitely did not deserve a standing ovation. And some of the pronunciation in the songs was laughable - we are still laughing now. Disappointed that they ruined my favourite musical. Exceptions where Mother Abbess whos voice is tremendous and the little girl who played Gretel on the evening of 25th January 08. They were splendid. - J Owens
27 Jan 08
Connie Fisher is quite bad. Reality tv is just a bit scam. There are so many actresses que who have played that part really well. The rest of the cast were ok, decent enough but this is just a very boring production. - Porter
16 Dec 07
I saw this last month and I didn´t enjoyed it. I've always loved the film but the show is just awful. Connie was really bad and had not chemistry with the Captain or with anyone else for the matter. Didn´t care much for the kids either. - Hillary
26 Oct 07
i saw this last november literally 2 weeks after opening night on my 17th birthday and i really enjoyed it. I've loved the film since I was young so it was nice to see the show. Connie was really good but i thought the kids were excellent but Leslie garrett stole the show for me with climb every mountain she got a standing ovation for it and i got a shiver down my back she sang so well! worth seeing its a feel good show. - hannah
23 Oct 07
Connie is terrible! Just shows that reality tv doesn't work, it only con's (excuse pun) the audience into going and thinking they have had a say in casting the show. No doubt she will continue to work and will probably improve but she should never have been given this opportunity in the first place. Tragic - phil t d
25 Aug 07
I'm quite suprised at all the negative reviews here. I saw the production in May and thought it was very good, and that Connie's performance was great. There was nothing wrong with her acting and if she was lip synching then I couldn't tell. The Captain was OK but his voice seemed a bit tired when I saw him. The kids were the ones who really stole the show. The sets were clever but I agree with the flying saucer opinions - from the upper circle the hills just looked weird. Maybe from a lower seat it'd be better. - Kat
12 Aug 07
Dull production. I thought it would have improved as i was quite disappointed the first time. Aoife's performance is great though, so much better than Connie's. The guy playing Captain Von Trapp looked bored all the time. The sets are quite awful especially the flying saucer. - Leon
02 Aug 07
This show is outstanding with Aoife Mulholland, the alternate, as Maria. I saw the show a few months ago with Connie and was not all that impressed. However this time I was completely blown away. Aoife is a wonderful actress with a beautiful singing voice to match and she has spot on comic timing. I would recommend this show to anyone, even if they did not particularly enjoy the movie, as the stage production gives so much more depth to it. - fan
30 Jul 07
AWFUL! Much worst than anticipated. Connie's performance was dull. It should have been a must see! The guy playing Captain Von Trapp is miscast for the role, and everyone in it looked bored. - cherie
04 Jul 07
I'm with the previous reviewer regarding Connie. I thought the kids were ok. The set was tacky with the mountain/flying saucer. Some songs were mimed by Connie. The music is memorable but I think Connie needs more acting coaching urgently. - Carla
29 Jun 07
Very disappointed with Connie, she has no charisma, she has no stage presence and performs like a maniac. The sets and costumes are fine but nothing to write home about, one would expect more in a major West End production. Overall this is quite a boring and expensive night out. - q
28 Jun 07
It was a bad production overall, no appeal. The sets were awful, totally overdone and the actors quite a mixed bag. The mother abbess and the children were ok. However Connie's performance was totally unmemorable. Don't waste your money. - theatrefan
03 Jun 07
Connie was shockingly bad. Get her out of there now. Below average. She ruins the whole show for me with her miming of the songs. Maria needs to have the star quality of Elena Roger in Evita. Connie needs to go back to drama school because she´s hopeless. - Bess
03 Jun 07
Not good Connie Fisher as Maria, very disappointed after such a long wait to finally see her, she has no stage presence. Ian Gelder was fine. Alex Hanson was very stiff but sang ok. Very boring in general and Connie acting is very over the top with all that arm flapping and she was clearly lipsynching several songs. And it wasn´t sold out at all, there were many empty seats. - Stephanie
30 May 07
We went last week. Connie was not up to West End standards, the children ok and the gay uncle very irritating. The Captain was better. Maybe they are all a bit tired now, but the production lacked energy, and the theatre wasn't even full. - Lucien
04 May 07
I wasn't a fan of the tv show and had my reservations about Connie but I gave her a chance to prove wrong but I wasn't convinced by her performance. She has an ok voice, but shamelessly mimes some of the songs, her performance is manic with all that arm flapping and she has no stage presence. It was one of the most boring nights I've ever spent at the theatre. - Sanjeev
26 Apr 07
A beautiful, well sung, well acted production-I loved every minute of it. I thought Connie fitted the part of Maria just perfectly and appeared very natural-the chemistry between her and the Captain really shone through. The staging of the concert, with sinister Nazi guards filming every moment was ingenious. The show received a standing ovation on the night I saw it-given it was just a Tuesday and the show has been running for some months now I think that speaks volumes. I was not bored but rather enchanted-this is a show that can melt the hardest heart. - Richard
25 Apr 07
Saw the show last week. All I can say is what a dull night. Connie was nothing more than a chorus girl, Garret's voice was good, Alexander Hanson quite dull. A very boring production. - Quentin
19 Apr 07
I really enjoyed the show when I went to see it and if I could afford to go back I would.
Superb production - enthralling. - Paul
18 Apr 07
I heard a little girl in the audience say "it's boring Mummy". It was. Lesley is good as a singer but can't act. The kids were ok. Connie has no charisma and mimes a couple of songs. - Mel
17 Apr 07
Oh, and by the way, to the person who between December and January posted 11 negative entries below and is still clearly multi-posting with different names - why don't you just go away and grow up. At the very least, take your pathetic Fisher obsession elsewhere. I thought WOS were stamping out this sort of nonsense? - Backdrifter
16 Apr 07
I'd liked to have seen this in a smaller venue as I found the Palladium a bit cavernous. However, I don't think that would have redeemed it much - it wasn't bad but didn't scale the heights of the better West End musicals I've seen in recent years. The best performer was Alexander Hanson as the Captain, who seemed to be the only one bringing any tangible emotion to the show. Connie Fisher has a nice voice but, like her performance generally, it lacked something. I liked some of her comic touches but overall she was just okay and I want more than that from a female lead. I can't bear Climb Every Mountain but Lesley Garrett made it reasonably bearable. Its reprise at the finale was very stirring though. The children were terrific, after the Captain they were the stars of the show. A few of the songs were really enjoyable and performed/staged very well, but overall for me the best thing about this show is how it expresses the anger some of Austria felt about what was happening to their country and citizens, and it's left to the Captain to carry that emotional weight. - Backdrifter
16 Apr 07
I was not impressed at all. Connie Fisher can't act and her singing is no more than average even when she was clearly miming a few of the songs, which is outrageous and shouldn't be allowed. Leslie Garret's singing was good, acting very bad! The set is awful and the choreography appallingly bad. I don't see it lasting especially after Connie has proved that she can't handle it much lomger. - Toni
05 Apr 07
What a terrible production, a wasted opportunity, it's a good show but ALW has ruined it. Connie is bad, sounds out of tune and acts so badly I couldnt believe my eyes. Was like watching an amateur production. - Rania
25 Mar 07
Well the night I went they were nearly all off - but, you know what, who cares. The show is bigger than a few names and quite frankly I would not have known Miss Fisher from - well - Eve. As for Miss Garrett - I can't say I am a great fan either. The staging is terrific - one really gets one's moneys worth. The production flowed along effortlessly, the overall experience was tremendous and with that fantastic closing scene, when they walk off over the mountains - a real coup de teatre. The Paladium is a great space - like a Broadway theatre - so although we were sitting in row K in the dress circle and to one side, we still had a terrific view. A great nights entertainment for famailies, couples or singles. - rds
23 Mar 07
Not good at all. Very boring, Sophie Bould was fine as Maria, but the whole thing was dull and they only had 5 children which was awful, only one Von Trapp boy which was totally ridiculous. If this was a small production I would understand, but for a big West End poduction it´s a disgrace. At the end of the day we are paying 60 quid and don´t even get an apology. It can be that hard to get another boy to play the part, not such a big role. Again the producers come across as shameless greedy, they just want your money and don´t care if you don´t get the product as they promote it. This is the last Andrew Lloyd Webber production I´m going, I´ve had enough. - Harriet
23 Mar 07
Just what London doesn´t need a dull staged production of the world´s most mediocre musical. Sound of Music is very dated. Connie Fisher seems to struggle vocally. The younger children are ok. Von Trapp was as dreadful as Connie. - curly
21 Mar 07
The opening of this show is awful with all those men dressed up as nuns, Connie was really weak, Lesley Garrett sings well but can't act. I've been to several west end productions but none has been as bad as this one. Very disappointing. - Garh
13 Mar 07
During 'How do you solve a problem like Maria' I never wanted Connie to win so i wasn't bother that she was off. The understudy was just ok, ok voice, couple of wrong notes. It was all quite boring and nobody got a standing ovation. Are the producers lying? - bertrtand
11 Mar 07
Take it from someone who was at the opening night - whoever is in the cast, just go! Last night we had 4 understudies - Maria, The Abbess, Max and Liesel - and each one of them were as good as those they replaced. Sophie Bould made Maria her own and had terrific chemistry with Von Trapp and the children. The standing ovation was well earned and clearly appreciated. This is a wonderful production (I'm not even a fan of the show!) which appears to be 'star'-proof. Gareth - Gareth James
10 Mar 07
Apologies to the good performes in this show but they deserve better than this dire production. Lesley Garrett has a great singing voice but her acting was unimpressive. Connie wasn't so good either. I'm just glad I just spent £10 in a standing ticket. Fortunately they were a few empty seats so I took one in row F quite central. - Bert
04 Mar 07
Given all the fuss with the tv program, I think this production is incredibly weak and doesn't live up to the expectations. I didn't enjoyed it. Connie Fisher didn't do very well, soumded rough. I don't believe she's a musical star, she should be in the chorus, if anywhere. Lesley Garrett is good at singing but can't act. The smaller roles are not well cast, the children are good though. Alex Hanson is quite wooden. Didn't care for the sets, awful flying saucer. A very disappointing experience. - Martine
03 Mar 07
I loved The Sound Of Music. Connie was fantastic as Maria, Lesley was incredible and the rest of the cast were also amazing and i cant wait to see the show again. - Libby
02 Mar 07
Sadly, wasn't impressed. One huge problem is Connie Fisher. She is such a weak leading lady. Average voice, can't act, just couldn't believe she was Maria. Leslie Garret singing was fine but so what? She's an opera singer so it would have been shocking if she couldn't sing Climb Every Mountain. - Nina
25 Feb 07
I went to see this in January and i thought it was amazing. Lesley garret's performance of climb every mountain was outstanding ! Connie, the children and the rest of the cast were also equally as good ! I really enjoyed my night, a totally feel-good show guaranteed to make you smile. - Lindsey Franklin
24 Feb 07
Connie Fisher as Maria wasn't good at all. Lesley Garret was a ok although very weak in the acting department. The reception from the audience was polite but not enthusiastic. Ian Gelder was very annoying. - Carla
21 Feb 07
I have seen Mamma Mia several times now with two different casts, and I have always unashamedly enjoyed the show. Call me simple if you will, but the show is “simply” great fun. If you like ABBA music and good humor, then Mamma Mia is for you; of course the pseudo-intellectual wannabes out there will tell you that it is a
simplistic, “vaudeville-esque” story propelled, tackily, by seventies pop music. These, of course, are the same people who would go to, and then debate endlessly, French art films rather than go to what they secretly long for, Toy Story 2. Well, excuse me for living, but the graveyard’s full.
Mamma Mia amuses me no matter what, and if I am going to pay good money to see a show, it might as well be something that brightens my day. If I want to be depressed and philosophize about the meaning of life and the suffering in the world, all I have to do is to turn on, for free, (not counting the TV tax) the cynical and nihilistic BBC daily news selling western civilization to the lowest bidder in the surreal “bazaar” of political correctness.
In what concerns art; I do not distinguish between art and entertainment. For me, there is no small or trivial “thing” in art. I agree with Picasso “Art is a lie that makes us realize truth,” and Mamma Mia is a lie I don’t mind being told repeatedly.
As far as the cast goes, as another reviewer already said, this musical
"transcends any expendable cast members", notwithstanding the obvious fact that personal audience taste varies, but as a whole, I am sure that most actors do their level best, most of the time, once they step on that stage. Given England’s population and the sheer number of stage schools churning out so many graduates per capita, it’s definitely a buyer’s market from the production side, who no doubt, get their pick of the West End litter in this peculiar little industry in this peculiar "little" Britain.
As far as the cast goes there are certain characters that appeal more to me
than others. I am sure that everybody who watches the show has to love
the characters Donna, Rosie and Tanya. The cast members filling the dynamo’s
shoes are another story. I have to say that I always thought that Kim Ismay was brilliant as Tanya until Suanne Braun came along. Although I would go back to see Kim Ismay in
the role of Tanya, I think Suanne Braun is uniquely superb and extremely funny, as if the role was created specifically for her.
Lara Mulcahy was hilarious as Rosie, but after watching Joanna Monro more
closely, I realized she is also great fun to watch; she’s a different kind of
Rosie, but still a very lovable one with a very "lady"-like presence on
stage.
Unfortunately, I only watched one Donna in all my times at the Prince of
Wales, so I do not have anybody to compare to; that being said, I do think that, as an entertainer, Lucy Harris is great fun to watch and therefore deserves the
title "Born to Be Donna”. She has been compared to several "stars" in different reviews and I new the comparison to the great Amalia Rodrigues would ruffle some feathers. The Portuguese are very protective of their Amalia and with good reason. Amalia Rodrigues single handedly put Portugal on the international map as the epitome of talent, grace and class. That being said, I do understand why Lucy Harris’s singing was compared to Amalia Rodrigues; they both have unique musical phrasing, independent of any differences in range, “character” or respiratory health.
Sophia Ragavelas has to be my favorite as Sophie Sheridan, I would not mind
seeing her again in this role.
I do hope the new Sky brings something unique to the show, I must admit I
did not think much of the Sky portrayed by either Fergus March or Gareth
Derrick; they both bored me to death. I imagine “Sky” the character, as a very
loveable young man, with lots of personality; unfortunately all I have seen
thus far is a sometimes arrogant, disconnected (Fergus March ) and effeminate (Gareth
Derrick) version.
The dads were/are quite fun to watch, although I must say that the
right Sam Carmichael has yet to be found and I leave it at that.
The ensemble is very likable, transmitting much energy, life and happiness to the audience. One exception is Rebecca Mckinnis who somewhat awkwardly sticks out in the group; perhaps a change of hats would lower her profile on stage?
I plan to return to Mamma Mia, in the not too distant future, to see the new Donna.
