starstarstarstarAs a fan on the original Tim Burton 1990 movie, I approached this production with a little trepidation. After acting on stage for twenty years and enjoying productions for even longer, I was unprepared for the treat that unfolded before me. I have never attended a ballet or dance production before, and am now glad that this was my first. The eloquent dancing, the modern touches, the poignant music all combined for a magical matinee that disappointed none in the audience. I have seen over a dozen West End productions, and I rank this among the top. For this production, Matthew Malthouse and Kerry Biggin formed a lovely duet as Edward and Kim, respectively, and the Topiary Garden scene still haunts my dreams. I am presently planning to return to London from Louisiana just to enjoy other Matthew Bourne productions, including Swan Lake, The Car Man, and Dorian Gray. Thank you for a wonderful New Year's Eve present to my trip to London. - Vincent P. Barras06 Jan 09
starThis does not rank with MB's other productions whcih at least had a storyline and decent music. The dance moves were boring; most of the time the dancers were out of time with each other, and the rest of the time they moved around like children playing at aeroplanes. Edward arrived, spent time in suburbia and then left. None of it was convincing. No subtext was conveyed, certainly not in a convincing way. Too much twittering around by background characters which was dull. It was a huge disappointment. I have followed this group for 15 years, so am willing to think highly of them but, in my opinion, MB let his dancers and audience down with this anaemic show. I should have left at the interval. - emma chisett30 Dec 08
starstarstarI thoroughly enjoyed this production. The story is well told, the set is great and some of the dancing is amazing. It's also a perfect length to take the kids to at 2 hours including a 20 min interval. - Steve15 Dec 08
starThe set is the star of this show - absolutely phenomenal. The dance is not exactly cutting-edge however. It is extremely safe, and I was left thinking how much more I would have enjoyed this show if Matthew Bourne had dared to push his dancers a bit further. None of the dance went beyond what you might expect to see in a musical. An enjoyable evening nonetheless, but if the choreography ventured above the idea of acting through pure gesture this show might have taken flight. - Dennis Whaite13 Dec 08
