A really entertaining evening with Miss Holden truely a star. Well worth booking for the toe tapping music and dance. Congratulations to the cast who were magical! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (81.99.30.147)

Very average and disappointing. Some nice touches, like the tapping stenographers. Maureen Lipman and her Chinese henchman are fun, Sheila Furgeson is totally terrible and whole thing may have been saved by a great Millie but Amanda Holden is just bland and thoroughly mediocre at best so the production is a dud unfortunately. You reaaly need better to justify a £40 ticket. Is there a curse on the Shaftesbury Theatre? - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.93.34.14)

Millie is an excellent show, although this version is not as good as what is currently on Broadway. Amanda Holden ok but that's just not good enough. considering how much talent there is out there. The stars for me were Craig Urbani, Helen Baker and the wonderful choreography. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.93.34.14)

I think on reflection that it wasn't the best time to go and see a show ....on the night after the First Night party... and judge it fairly.... cast having given their all the night before and now probably nursing hangovers from the party.....
However as that is when I went so that is the show I have to judge!
I was so looking forward to a BIG Broadway style song and dance show... and from the word that was floating across the pond that's what I thought I was going to get. Determined to banish all comparison of the film from my head I went in open minded, sure I was going to leave on a high having witnessed something rare and special.
How wrong I was!
All in all I thought the show was little more than a succession of missed oportunities pieced together with particularly bland music.
The set, although attempting to echo the Art Deco style of the period looked cheap and uninteresting. The backdrops weren't even well executed and during the laundry scenes I half expected Widow Twanky to enter throwing Chocolate Buttons out of a basket!
The much lauded Tony award winning choreography could have been both refreshing and exciting and certainly showed some promise...... but like much of the show came to nothing...
Why oh why were BIG dance numbers crammed onto a tiny section of the stage , especially during the speak-easy scene?
The type-tap number could have rivled the dustbin lid routine from Crazy For You but was restricted by keeping the cast in their chairs for the whole thing.... why not use the chairs for the initial gimmic then disgard them to free up the movement?
The cast worked hard and could not be faulted for their energy but it seemed that each of the principals were in a different show from the other.
Ms Holden although perfectly pleasant was not a strong or accomplished enough stage actress to carry a role around which the entire show hinges. She seemed ill at ease and didn't know what to do with her hands during solo numbers.
The piece in itself is fairly insubstantial and as such relys upon a strong cast in order for it to work. But it is such a well known piece that I dont think it needed a 'name' in the lead!
And then there was Ms Lipman! Pantomime season is not officially quite with us.... but perhaps the dodgy sets led her to believe otherwise. "New lamps for old!". All it missed was Frank Bruno popping out of her ring..... so to speak!
In a performance which I can only describe as excruciating the usually excellent Ms Lipman marked her way through a gift of a part with little or no comic timing and barely a laugh to be had. I can only hope that this is how she has been directed to play the part and if not ..... please someone give her some!!!!
Mark Mcgee's Jimmy although again pleasant isn't charming or cheeky enough... nor is he a strong enough singer.
Ms Ferguson seems to have just stepped off a cruise ship and lacks the warmth needed to play Muzzy.
It is therefore left to Mr Urbani as Trevor Graydon and Miss Baker I believe as she is not credited on the web site (and i couldn't find a programme seller) as Miss Dorothy to shine as wonderful comic foils. Their voices and acting made the show bareable.
As for the surtitles .... ok funny once.... passable twice but by the third time I'd had enough and with the onset of "Mammy" I was squirming in my seat!
That coupled with the cop out ending (where was the big fight and the fireworks??????) the evening ended on a low.
The best laugh I had all evening was when the 'new girl' arrived in town at the finale and my companion lent over to me and said "I think she left her doll and scooter in a different show" !
All in all a very disappointing evening out. Having said that I'm sure it will run and run!

Not the best show in the West End at the moment and a bit too "panto" in parts but nonetheless entertaining. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (62.6.139.13)

Thoroughly old fashioned Millie is more like it. Apart frokm a few (a very few) good non-pc jokes it doesn't have much going for it. The book makes little sense, the songs are instantly forgettable (with the exception of the title tune) and rarely move the action forward. How something this ordinary could have won six Tony awards and continues to run after 18 months on Broadway is somewhat dispiriting. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (172.187.216.148)

Personally I loved the show having been left disappointed with it in New York. Amanda Holden is no worse than many West End leads, and a damn sight better than some, Maureen Lipman is considerably funnier that Harriet Harris was in New York, and Amanda Brown(is that the correct name?) makes a wonderful Miss Dorothy. The ensemble are excellently drilled and even the much maligned Sheila Fergusson is not as bad as made out. The sets are serviceable, and overall I had a wonderful night out at the theatre, certainly much more so than when I went to see the highly over-rated Anything Goes.
Highly recommended as far as I am concerned. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (217.206.150.18)

I enjoyed it, especially the choreography. really visually tight, though agree the set isnt' up to much. Craig Urbani nearly steals the show. he is tremendously funny and talented. love love love the patter song - USER: Whatsonstage.com (82.35.62.168)

Well I think many of the reviews I have read are "Dont kick a dog when its down" due to the current poor state of the West End.
Thing with critics that is impossible to remove from the brain is they dont pay a bean! and got supplied with free champers most of them too.
Where do I start with Millie, the songs are poor, the staging cheap, the band tinny and the cast oh dear,Amanda Holden screetches her way through the whole show and nobody on stage can hold a tune.
Ferguson and Lipman are unaudable most of the time.
Mostly the show is a lavish poorly produced panto and for 40 quid a ticket-Forget it.
Go see Anything Goes as it seems Nunn is the only person that can actually direct a musical these days.
Millie waont last as it isnt very good,SIMPLE AS THAT! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (81.130.96.244)
