starstarThis was, for me, by some way the weakest play in the current season. With the notable exceptions of the ever reliable Ian Gelder and the wonderfully moving Eve Myles, this production had little to offer. Bradley's Titus gives hints that it might become great with time, but when I saw it it appeared to be a work in progress. Aaron lacks evil and Lloyd Fillingham's emperor is a bizarre (and frankly annoying) mix of Robin Williams and Frankie Howard. The direction is typical Alexander - sparse to the point of being almost non-existant and consequently this play takes a long time to get going - and only comes to life when Bradley, Myles and Gelder are on stage together in the disturbing "fly scene". The cutting of Titus's murder of his brother means that we never really understand the depth of Titus's loyalty to the state and so the play loses much of its power. Go and see Cymbeline instead - it's wonderful!!! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (81.107.199.119)06 Oct 03
starstarstarstarA restrained production and a wonderful performance by David Bradley as Titus. Certainly worth seeing but I was amazed at the cut in Act 1 of the scene where Titus kills his son for disobeying him. Maybe to evince more sympathy for Titus but it changes the whole feeling of the play - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.8.166.80)03 Oct 03
starstarstarstarstarBill Alexander's enthralling production has a beautifully classic look, which sets the perfect tone for this grimly comic play. David Bradley's central performance is rivetting- I would love to see him take on King Lear now. I remember the Brian Cox production at the RSC quite a few years ago, which gained huge acclaim; this production is easily its match. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (212.248.148.63)26 Sep 03
