starstarstarAWP presents Copacabana Music by Barry Manilow, Lyrics by Bruce Sussman & Jack Feldman Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham, 12 June 2003 This new production of Barry Manilow’s “Copacabana” opened its regional tour at the much-loved Alex. There was certainly an air of great expectation as the overture began and the house lights slowly dimmed. Director and choreographer Anthony Williams whose company AWP have staged this show has certainly put a great deal of effort into devising the new dance routines and has changed the show quite subtlety. This is one of the great musicals of modern times with spectacular song and dance and some great character parts too. Louise Freeman was very confident as both showgirl Lola and songwriter’s wife Samantha and projected herself effectively although I would like to have seen more of the comedy of the part particularly during the song auditions where she performs “Man Wanted” draped across the top of an upright piano! She made the most of “El Bravo” with its pirates and colourful costumes and overall gave an outstanding performance. Nik Stoter put 100% into the roles of both Stephen and Tony and was at his best in “Changing my Tune” and the duet with Lola where they perform “This Can’t be Real”. I suspect that the long run of the show will allow him to develop the character of Tony further and bring out more of the magic and visual spontaneity of the role. Gemma Craven was outstanding as Conchita Alvarez the aging showgirl and girlfriend of gangster Rico. She made the most of the characters main musical number “Welcome to Havana” and opening as it does Act 2 it had great impact and was most memorable. Aly McInnes was wonderfully loud and brash as Gladys and it was good to see “When You’re a Copa Girl” in this production as it makes more of the comedy which underlines her character. Christopher Howard was larger than life as nightclub owner Sam Silver and sparred well with Gladys and gave an amusing performance of “Who am I Kidding?” Mark Faith has a strong voice and performed Bolero De Amor well but I would like to have seen the more sinister elements of his character made just that. Craig Ryder as Willy was a fast moving waiter and Alex Toohey had presence as both McManus and the Maitre d’. The whole cast worked well together providing a visually impressive picture. The Copa Boys and Girls filled the stage with their glamourous, stylish and very professionally delivered dance routines. However, I was not convinced that putting the boys into so many feathers and making some of their movements more ballet orientated added to the 1940s period feel of the show but it did add a certain campness which I am sure will attract a great following. The production design is by David Walton and his sets are sparkling along with many of the costumes. This is a big production and judging by the audience applause they certainly enjoyed the show and I think it will do well on tour. Clive Fuller - USER: Whatsonstage.com (217.34.91.179)13 Jun 03
