Amazing performances and songs. The lack of majore sets allows you to focus on the story and characters. Well worth getting a ticket to. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (217.35.141.121)

I went to Ragtime for the second time yesterday and I liked it even better and think this to be a really excellent musical. Even though Kevyn Morrow was off last night David Durham did an excellent job (some heavy breathing, but great otherwise).
Well done, I only hope I can catch it again before it closes. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (82.35.56.7)

Sorry, but it was dull, dull, dull and I struggled to sit through first half. My neighbour was looking at my programme to check how many songs to go and left at the interval. Sad because the musicians did a good job, the singing was enjoyable - but poor script, weak lyrics and a case of trying to cover too many angles (though not in too short a time - it was also too long). - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.166.41.149)

I think this is probably the best new musical I've seen since Rent, although very different. Social upheaval in the 1900s swept up in the relentless rag music. Although the production is considerably more pared down than I heard the New York production was (where Model T Fords were assembled onstage), the London production really allowed some wonderfully moving performances to shine through. This is the third production I've seen Maria Friedman in, and I've always marvelled at her eyes flickering over the stalls, drawing the audience in. But Kevyn Morrow as Coalhouse was the absolute standout. Really gripping, and hugely moving. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (217.40.62.229)

5 stars for the actual musical..the best score EVER....magnificent music. But what a TERRIBLE CHEAP production. and Maria Friedman is appaling in it...any coincidence her sister produced it? i think NOT. SUCH a shame. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.93.50.13)

I saw this show last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The auditorium had very few empty seats that I could see. At the end a number of people stood and applauded. I would have appreciated it more if it had a proper stage setting, other than being left to the individuals own imagination. If the words hadn't been so clear I'm sure some of what went on would have been lost. I felt a saga like this needed a stage setting like Les Mis to make it great to watch. I loved Rebecca Thornhill's cameo spot. There must be a musical somewhere for her to star in. She was by no means the only one to impress, but her performance was excellent albeit for too short a time. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (80.193.222.20)

and see it soon. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (80.193.222.20)

Musical Theatre, like Opera is cliché (apart from Sondheim!). However, this did not detract from the powerful message Ragtime conveyed. Yes, the music was at times repetitive and predictable and the lyrics schmaltzy but the performances were nothing but excellent. The staging was indeed interesting and though the addition of complex moving scenery may have added just to the 'wow' factor, the use of lighting was sufficient in its stead. The band were, like the cast, excellent. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.13.76.108)

We have seen this show twice now, and both times it was brilliant ,even without the lavish scenery, the story and the way it is brought to you is really very good, the cast all are terrific, cannot fault any of their singing voices, each and everyone of them are playing their part perfectly, and making you feel the story , with all the different emotions and views which were around at that period of time, if I could give it more than a score of 5 we would . - USER: Whatsonstage.com (62.253.128.5)

This was one of the dreariest evenings I have ever spent in a theatre. It started promisingly with a lively ragtime number, then gradually descended into "les Mis" country, with earnest, totally unmemorable - but obviously heartfelt - songs, which you forget every bar of once the (very able) cast stop singing.
We almost left at the interval - mistake as the 2nd half has even less ragtime music & even more cliched angst on American guilt topics, which may go down well in the mid west but are of scant interest here when they are handled in such an obvious manner.
The final scene had us reaching for the sick-bags: Token black baby (played by a doll wrapped in a t-towel up to this stage) suddenly bounds on looking like a Michael Jackson (original model) 5 year old in white knickerbocker suit! Combined with cute mother & imigrant father getting hitched (we wrongly assumed old husband would be shot to allow this ending, but alternative cliche was possibly even worst) this really was too much.
Good points were strong cast & simple but very effective set, but really this material should not have left its homeland. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (198.141.197.3)

A pale imitation of the production seen in the U.S. and Canada; the Brits don't know what they are missing. The lack of scenery and props cripples what might have been a brillian production. It is difficult to appreciate all the nuances of the story line without some of the visual clues. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (205.188.209.78)

Glorious, simply and totally glorious. Magnificent singing, and much praise to the designers who have used minimal props and magical lighting to create a mesmerising and atmospheric stage picture.

Interminably long, repetitive music, minimalism taken beyond a joke (will a gardner's pug containing 4 all-but-dead hyacinths brought to centre stage by one of the leads really suffice as a garden in the West End?)and a book bogged down in the overblown stories of black repression, mid-European immigration (much better in Rags)and white supremacy, result in a musical of serious tedium. Miss it. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (62.252.160.4)

I couldn't face the second half, my songwriting partner was appalled, cliche songs and characters and when he was singing to the baby i wanted to puke, however he thought the band and orchestration were very good! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (212.134.228.97)

Brilliant show the cast were all putting their hearts and souls into their characters, the fact that there isnt all the trimmings that was in american production doesnt matter, you can concentrate on the performers themselves,if you dont go to see it you will really be missing a great show, we will be going again as soon as we can thats for sure, with a standing ovation after the matinee performance - USER: Whatsonstage.com (62.253.148.104)

Where has Kevyn Morrow been hiding? This is a young man of such strength and grace that it took the West End to recognize the stellar talent of this remarkable and powerful American actor. The entire cast is permeated with outstanding talent, but Mr. Morrow as Coalhouse Walker, Jr. stands out. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (216.170.63.223)

Sensational! This is a show that is full of class. Maria Friedman, Dave Willits, Kevyn Morrow and Rebecca Thornhill are all sensational. The music and costumes are excellent and the minimalist set, just as in Chicago, is most effective. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (194.105.161.115)

Whilst there are a couple of good individual performances, particularly Maria Friedman as Mother, the sum of individuals doesn’t add up to a good performance. Unless you want to drown in a Pacific of American pathos, don’t bother. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (62.231.147.210)

Good but not great. I think it is a bit too American for a London audience. The whole "Anyone can make it here" melting pot thing is so much a part of the American psyche that you can see why they loved the show there, it is almost an act of patriotism. In London it seems rather less relevant. That said, the performances are great and the spare staging is effective. Kevyn Morrow was superb. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (80.193.222.20)

'Giving the nation a new syncopation' The era of RAGTIME has arrived!
Set in the early 1900's & seen through the eyes of a young boy, it tells the story of how the lives of a white American family are turned upside down by their chance involvement with the fight for justice and recognition by a Negro family and a Jewish immigrant father in the rapidly changing social, cultural and political status of their time.
The quality cast is headed by Maria Friedman, Dave Willetts and Gary Bickley, all synonymous with top class musical productions and this is no exception.
2 hours 50 minutes, but hardly a moment to catch your breath as your emotions are sent swirling and churning as you are challanged, saddened, educated and uplifted. 100years on, man's intolerance still finds excuses to raise war and hatred on fellow man on charges of race or religion, colour or creed. But this is by no means all doom and gloom. We are given a glimmer of hope in compassion, a bending of intolerance in mutual respect and are transported 'on wheels of a dream' by love which crosses all boundaries.
If there is any justice - Bush and Blair permitting - it should run and run, but there are just 12 weeks at present to be sure of catching this. Book your 1st ticket soon to allow time to get back and see it again, and again and ..... - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.93.50.13)
