starstarI agree with the review of this production by Mark Shenton. It is slow and not helped by the bare staging. However, I did consider the performance by Elliot Cowan to be above average and in fact stronger than that of Nardini. Can somebody tell me how anybody that well-built can die of consumption and why did nobody give her a wig, if they were going to dress her up in period costume? I cannot help there are actresses as beautiful but better built for the part and who have better projection than her. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (194.66.182.83)21 May 03
starstarstarI completely agree that this was nowhere near as bad as we were led to believe. It might be a bit misguided in terms of adaptation (Pam Gems version is so much better) and direction, but the performances are very good (particularly Paul Shelly), there are some great scenes and Daniella Nardini is just a good actress who has just been miscast - we all make mistakes, you know. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (212.211.99.2)01 Apr 03
starstarstaractually , whilst Nardini is indeed the weakest link (butdoing her best which I suppose has to be applauded) the combination of the great supporting cast, interesting adaptation of the original novel and David McVicar's stark but effective production , this was nowhere near the debacle that some of the critics had led me to believe. With a more accomplished actress in the leading role this really would have been rather an illuminating and ultimately moving evening. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (212.153.250.242)27 Mar 03
