starstarstarstarCATS Musical score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and based on T S Eliot’s ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’ Alexandra Theatre, 15 October 2003 Last night saw a full house thoroughly enjoy what must be a musical legend, after 21 years in the West End of London the celebrated show is on a national tour, which opened in Plymouth for Clear Channel Entertainment and has arrived in Birmingham. Unlike many in the audience, I had never seen this show before and really did not know what to expect. Directed by Trevor Nunn, this is a colourful mix of sounds, music, movement and songs. I found the first act somewhat slow to establish itself and it seemed a long time before we got to Memory, which was performed skilfully by Chrissie Hammond as Grizabella. I loved the large Gumbie black and white cat and this part of the show had elements almost of ‘panto’ and was most amusing. The second act is a totally different situation with lively and imaginative scenes from the start, such as the pirate sketch, which I believe is an addition to the original show. The whole thing moved along at a good pace and the big production number ‘Mr Mistoffelees’ played by Guy-Paul Ruolt De St Germain almost brought the house down. The large cast give it 100% and the wonderful costumes and their dancing ability allow them to get well into character including visits to the seats of members of the audience from time to time. The set and lighting were spectacular and the dance well choreographed. The sound was clear throughout and the orchestra, which was of West End size provided a great backing. The production continues at the Alex until 1 November and then continues with the tour well into Spring 2004. Clive Fuller - USER: Whatsonstage.com (81.128.8.15)16 Oct 03
starThis show is the tackiest I've ever seen - a set that's been seen a million times before, cats running in and out of the audience, and then, to top it all, 'Old Deut' (yes, that's what he was signing) was signing programme on the stage in the interval! The best part was actually getting a chance to go on the stage! Only redeemed by the excellent lighting! Much easier to buy the video, and much cheaper at that! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (172.185.172.43)29 Jul 03
starstarstarGreat staging, special effects etc. brilliant dancing, singing - average to good. But.... why anyone would want to see this more than once is beyond me, obviously not my thing, bring back POTO and Joseph! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (62.64.141.101)03 Jul 03
starstarstarEnjoyable performance though singers were not upto standard I would have expected for a high class production. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (128.240.229.7)16 May 03
