starstarstarstarstarA brilliant piece of theatre, the best I've seen for several years; I've seen it both at WYP and the Comedy Theatre. The move from narrative to poetry is seamless, the timing impeccable and Tom Courtenay uses the constricted set in a lively way. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (81.131.141.82)23 Mar 03
starstarstarstarThis production certainly has a charm about it, a nice chat with a very interesting man. Courtenay is excellent, I think I would watch him read a telephone directory (with the right direction and usual style naturally), he really took me in. However, I left the theatre last night feeling slightly sorry for Larkin and rejecting his world view (as I have always done). An interesting character played by a great actor with good writing (the best bits actually being Larkin’s Poems). The two hours flew by and I was charmed in a very English way. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (80.193.222.20)12 Mar 03
starstarstarstarstarAn absolutely superb one-man show. The amazing thing is that even if you don't particularly like Larkin's work, the production is still hugely enjoyable! The poems themselves are seamlessly incorporated into the narrative, and Sir Tom deserves to win every award going. I saw this production when it first opened at the WYP, and it's a pleasure to see something of this quality transfer to London. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.92.168.164)05 Mar 03
starstarstarstarstarI don't know what funhouse style walls are but don't let it put you off if you don't either. This is a piece for the lovers of Philip Larkin. Courtenay recites- if that is the word - the poems brilliantly, best I have ever heard but I have to confess that I know the poems well. The piece is revelatory about the man, very funny and even topical and show one of our best actors at his best. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (213.122.89.142)25 Feb 03
starstarstarstarstarA real treat. A magnificent performance of an excellent compilation of poems and stories. A breath of fresh air in a stale West End full of long-running musicals and tosh ! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.232.30.16)19 Feb 03
starstarstarI loved Courtenay's performance (I could watch him read a phone book) but found the show lacking something. I just didn't feel as engaged as I thought I ought to. The best bits for me were when he was being Larkin and just talking about his life. I wanted more of that. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (80.193.222.20)19 Feb 03
starstarstarstarI agree with the last reviewer. Courtenay's very great success is in making you appreciate the poetry. He engages your interest in Larkin whose poetry was fascinating and enduring but who held very unattractive opinions on almost everything except poetry. Admirers of Courtenay and Larkin's poetry must see this. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.93.50.13)19 Feb 03
starstarstarstarThere is no review posted for this show so I thought if you are interested you might like to know that it really good. You have to like Philip Larkin's work or poetry or Tom Courtney to enjoy it. It is a one man show and Tom has put it together himself. It takes a day when Larkin had to move house and we find him among the packing cases musing about his life. It is moving and very funny. I recommend. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (80.193.222.20)19 Feb 03
