   | Original yes. Good choreography and dancing yes. However, this doesn't make for a good night in the theatre. The first piece is awful; the next two have their merits - but I'm afraid it doesn't really add up to £40 worth and a satisfying night out. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (212.211.110.23) | 26 Apr 03 |
  | Advised to go and see this 'wonderful musical' by my Musical Theatre Tutor.
I was very disappointed!
Musical? I don't think so.
Act 1 and 11 were in my opinion a waste of my time. Act 111 was good, I was fortunate to the full cast, but was pleased I had managed to buy reduced priced tickets thanks to Ken Livingstone!!! £10- just about what it was worth. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.92.168.163) | 19 Apr 03 |
 | Cute people in swings, in cafes, and (God help us) a girl in a yellow dress don't provide enough dsramatic stimulus. Seeing an audience just gawking at the sexiness of the actors is NOT worth your £40 by any means. At the end of the day, this is modern dance, misleadingly advertised as a musical. (Presumably to get bums on seats?) - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.93.50.13) | 10 Mar 03 |
    | I wasn't that keen on seeing contact.. had heard from a few people that it was a pale imitation of the Broadway verion and should be seen on a thrust stage... but others had told me was much fresher here.. Before I mention the show I saw another piece of terribly bad behavior.. a mid 50's woman was asked to stop talking by the elderly couple in friont of her.. so she freaked out and started banging her plastic bags around to deliberatly annoy them.. until I leaned over and said "For Gods Sake" and she stopped..
I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it.. the third part is the only completely satisfactory piece for me but the other two were interesting....
I was slightly perturbed in the audience reaction to Craig Urbani as the abusive husband in part 2.. I didn't think it was funny that he was abusing her but many seemed to.. I can see there is much humour in that piece but not from his actions shouting at her... oh hum... Sarah Wildor was just amazing as the wife dreaming of escape.. really expressive and touching.. a wonderful performance.
I was blown away by the third piece, Contact.. and I thought theat Michael Praed did a fantastic job in the role.. Craig Urbani was excellent as the bar keeper.. and Leigh Zimmerman took by breath away.. really sexy and magnetic as the girl in the yellow dress.. The company of dancers were exceptional.. I was really emotionally involved in this story.. even though I am sure everyone could see the twists coming from a mile away it really works as a stunning dance piece...
The whole night seemed to be over in ten minutes... really liked it..
Cheers, Lee. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (213.86.234.1) | 06 Mar 03 |

 | We went expecting a musical, but although the dancing is fine, there's nothing here to suggest a musical. Really poor dinner-theatre stuff and NOT worth the money. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.93.34.187) | 15 Feb 03 |
     | Loved it! The show was not what I had been expecting. It was very fresh, lively, witty and very entertaining. Made me want to dance! All dancers were great. I particularly enjoyed Craig Urbani's humourous characters, adding to the overall fantastic production. I would be interested to see how well Contact worked on the televised version. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (81.131.150.166) | 09 Feb 03 |
     | Loved it, loved the sensitive choice of music, loved Michael Praed, loved the stories told through dance. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (81.103.250.45) | 01 Feb 03 |
 | The dance equivalent of karaoke. Using "recorded music", indeed! Where does that leave live music? A sterile evening, self-regarding and non-communicative. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.93.50.8) | 24 Jan 03 |
 | If only I could give this no stars....... what a poor excuse for a musical.
I went to see this in October and am so thankful the tickets were free otherwise I would have felt very upset at spending 40 quid - USER: Whatsonstage.com (194.81.54.200) | 23 Jan 03 |
     | I went to see Contact in December and am going to see it again in a few weeks' time. I think it's absolutely brilliant. I laughed all the way through (I don't think I was meant to in some places, but that didn't stop me!). Michael Praed is great as Michael Wiley and Leigh Zimmerman and Sarah Wildor dance up a storm, as do the rest of the troupe - they are fantastic. Craig Urbani plays two completely different characters and is brilliant as both of them and I hope he get the Olivier Award in February that he's been nominated for - he deserves it! | Caught this on the two for one deal at the end of December - so I didn`t get caught with £80 for two. Great - thought it would be pretentious after the Swing sequence but things just got better and better, It is different but after the predictable b******s of the Lion King, 125 Street thank God it was. Come on you miseries widen your horizons. Happy New Year. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (129.35.81.17) | 07 Jan 03 |
 | I would award this piece of self-regarding bilge NO stars, but the computer won't do it. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.93.50.8) | 19 Dec 02 |
 | Bad, bad, BAD! Whatever happened to "triple-threat" - all singing, all dancing, all acting? One outta three IS bad. Save your money and go to "Our House" instead - now there's a good piece of theatre. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.93.50.8) | 19 Dec 02 |
 | A "MUSICAL"? I don't think so. How does this show have the front to bill itself as such? As far as I could see in the programme, they didn't even credit the recorded excerpts they used. Have these preening gits stopped to think that without MUSIC, ~Dance is nowhere (I refer you to the silent bit in "Amadeus", when the court appears to ban music in The Marriage of Figaro. A girl in a yellow dress - ho hum - tie a yellow ribbon, yellow rose of Texas... Fine dancing, but deluded and pompous in concept, lacking drama and song. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.93.50.8) | 19 Dec 02 |
    | This show was surprisingly better than I had expected and was quite different to anything else I'd seen. Three short stories - In the Swing lasted about 10 minutes and was fun, frothy, frivolous and a bit raunchy but was a nice opener. Act 2 - Did You Move ran for about 35 minutes and was quite gritty and quite a contrast to the opener. Did You Move was was quite dark at times but then burst into shear fantasy nd escapsim. Act 3 - Contact was really the meat on the bone and ran for just over an hour. Contact had quite a good story to it and developed well and you couldn't help but feel for the lead character in his search and need for contact. The story is told mostly through dance so may not be everybody's cup of tea but I enjoyed it very much. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (62.254.64.5) | 14 Dec 02 |
     | Nothing short of SENSATIONAL; a re-definition of the musical; a gorgeous entertainment that is moving, poignat and profound. Sarah Wildor - a revelation - as the beleagured wife to Craig Urbani's vile husband dances as if air served only to carry her. Leigh Zimmerman as the Girl In the Yellow Dress, and is there any creature more desirable on the London Stage? Yet this magical evening belongs to Michael Praed, whose astonishing performance will make you cry. And think. And Laugh. And cry again. He is simply extrordinary! See it. See him. SEE IT!!! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.129.126.28) | 28 Nov 02 |
  | Being a fan of Stro I was really looking forward to this, but I thought it was a waste of £40 (plus booking fee!). A show with no orchestra that lasted under 2 hours and the dancing didn't have any "wow" factor. Added to which Leigh Zimmerman and Craig Urbani were not in the show. It's outrageous at the prices being charged that two of the leads are not contracted to appear in every performance.
I loved Leigh as Velma in Chicago and I was disappointed not to see her, but I don't think she would have changed my opinion of the show. As a fan of Gavin Lee it was nice to see him again but I would love to see him in a show to suit his talents, "Crazy For You" this isn't! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.92.168.167) | 26 Nov 02 |
     | FANTASTIC!!!!!! I loved it, great dancers, fantastic acting and a wonderful show, made the audiance really want to dance. I don't understand any of the negative comments about Michael Praed on here, he was fabulous, a treat to finally see him on stage.
I hope this show will run longer then just until February. If you want to have a great night out go and see it. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (213.227.150.31) | 11 Nov 02 |
 | Pathetic load of pap and 40 quid for this,a total rip off and the show is a sexy as the magic roundabout.Leigh Zimmerman looks like a man in drag pulling the wooden Praed round the stage.
Laughable,Avoid like the plague! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (205.188.209.78) | 07 Nov 02 |
     | By the interval, I was disappointed at having spent £30 on my ticket. The second part changed my mind completely, the attempted suicide chilled me, the dancers thrilled me, Zimmerman was superb, with legs to die for. Michael Praed was wonderful, as he learnt to express himself through movement and Craig Urbani held it all together. I loved it. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 02 Nov 02 |
 | So bad it's not even worth it to write about it. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 01 Nov 02 |
 | Terrible, just too pretentious. Felt sorry for the dancers, trying to do their best in such a tiny stage. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 31 Oct 02 |
 | Apart from the second segment, nothing is really memorable in this show, in fact is plain boring. The Swing starts nicely but develops really silly. Did You Move? is the best bit although not very original. Contact, the last segment, is just pure dull and I better don't get started on Michael Praed. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 31 Oct 02 |
 | Very poor production of a good show. Why didn't do it like on Broadway? - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 31 Oct 02 |
 | This is really bad. Totally dull and boring. Michael Praed plays his part so annoinly that one wishes he would kill himself soon so the story can end. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 31 Oct 02 |
 | The only thing I would save is the dancers as they are all at least competent. Pity about the show. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 31 Oct 02 |
 | I can't believe that Susan Stronman is presenting her show in London in such a small theatre. All the charm and freshness that the show had in New York has disappear in its London production plus Leigh Zimmerman looks so uncomfortable al the time. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 30 Oct 02 |
 | Very bad. Very boring. Maybe it could be better in a bigger stage. At the Queens it looks really cheap. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 30 Oct 02 |
     | Saw this in previews and thought it was terrific, made me want to get up outta my seat and dance! Sarah Wildor especially gives a beautiful technical performance that is emotionally moving the entire way through the piece. A terrific part for a terrific dancer. Act 3 needed a bit more steam but I couldn't help but think that the dances would have looked better on a much bigger stage. Stroman's choreography has such a wide sweep to it, the stage itself diminished the impact. Having said that, we enjoyed every moment of this new show. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 29 Oct 02 |
 | To be fair Matthew Bourne did it better. 'Contact' should never be called a musical. The dance in Part two 'Did you move' was repeated too many times , you feel it was there just to make up for time. I feel like paying the full price to see a touring show, I don't see why most of the music been replaced by a tape instead of live music? a total rip off! However the only good thing that comes out of 'Contact' is Michael Praed, maybe I didn't expect him to dance so well. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 29 Oct 02 |
 | Terrible show, really dull and boring. Nothing original. The segment Did You Move was a bit better, but there's nothing new to it, Matthew Bourne has been there before. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 29 Oct 02 |
 | Awful. Wrong cast, wrong venue, tacky production, total disappointment. Why didn't Susan Stronman bring the show to London as it was presented on Broadway? Ta save some money I suppose. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 29 Oct 02 |
     | Wondeful. This production is superb. The whole cast perform so well and Leigh Zimmerman is astounding when she is the Girl in the Yellow Dress. She performs with such sexual flair and looks amazing. The sets are a treat to watch. All the costumes are superb and most appropriatly designed. This is much more than I expeced. Howver, Michael Praed proves a disappointmen; he neither acts or dances with style. Sarah Wiler is excellent in the 2nd act. I really enjoyed this - shame the music is recorded though. I highly recommend this beautiful musical: if you can call it that! - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 27 Oct 02 |
   | Sadly, this cast do not do the show any justic at all. Leigh Zimmerman looks a sensation on stage when the Girl in the Yellow Dress, but for the rest of the show she dances like she was being forced to walk over hot coles. The leading men, MP and CU, are both quite pleasing. This show is not at all in the correct venue. The new London Theatre or Apollo Victoria would be much more sensible for a new piece of theatre in London. However, this show has good music and the supporting dancers are good - they are lucky if they get room to dance in such a crampt stage. This show will hopefully sell well as its foundations are good, but appart from that I was not to taken by it. With a better cast this will be excellent. I was pleased to see a new type of thetare in London. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 26 Oct 02 |
 | I saw the orinal Broadway production 2 years ago and loved it so I was really excited that the show was coming to London. What a disappointment. Instead of her original conception of the show cheeky Stro gives us a cheap touring production to fit the tiny stage of the Queens theatre, the same that Ann Reinking did with Fosse in London. Why this Yanks think that London deserves less than NY?
The show would have looked much better at the New London or National Olivier both with rounded stages similar to the Vivien Beaumont in NY where Contact played for more than 2 years.
The dancers are good in general, but Michael Praed is just awful and makes his character really annoying. Leigh Zimmerman was better in Chicago. In Contact she just looks uncomfortable and out of place, maybe because she's much taller than her dancing partners and they constantly struggle to lift her up. The hair style doesn't suit her either as it attracts too much attention to her big ears. Sara Wildor does a good job and so does Craig Urbani, but does not enough to justify the general boredom and tediousness of the evening.
- USER: Whatsonstage.com | 26 Oct 02 |
    | It was excellent! Leigh Zimmerman was good; she was better as Velma Kelly in 'Chicago' though. The rest of the cast were all pleasing to watch. I really enjoyed it. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 25 Oct 02 |
 | After all the hype I expected to be blown away by this show - not so. It looks like a dance college production! The ensemble are ballet dancers trying to do jazz and need to learn how to partner dance. The choroegraphy, and direction are trite and in many places frankly embarrassing - the swing, the dialogue, the poor guy who does the breadroll gags. Leigh Zimmerman was distinctly unsexy and looked bored. At the end of the show anyone in the audience that had ever danced just looked horrified. Were the cast a lot better in NY?
- USER: Whatsonstage.com | 25 Oct 02 |
    | an excellent evenings entertainment.Three separate stories all entertaining in their own way. Great acrobatics from Chris Jarvis and Helen Anker in the Swing.
Sarah Wildor excellent crossover from her earlier Royal ballet career in the second tale.
Leigh Zimmerman tall stately blond and so attractive ideal as the woman in the Yellow Dress. Cast dance the Stroman choreography superbly. Like a ballet performance you can see this show again and again and see something new. Best dancing since Fosse.Great music even though on tape.A fun night out and recommended. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 24 Oct 02 |
   | Found it a bit of a mixed bag really, tedius in parts, thrilling in others. Particularly enjoyed Sarah Wildor as the downtrodden, timid wife who bursts into life during the dream sequences of the 'Did You Move' section. Loved the accent, too. Probably go to see it again when I must remember to take some rolls with me! - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 24 Oct 02 |
 | I am not sure the WOS reviewer saw the same awful boring show I did,but as he is a self confessed Stroman fan(Stro indeed!!) I will take his review with a massive grain of salt I think it deserves and I guess he didnt pay 30 quid to see it like I did!!. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 24 Oct 02 |
  | Saw the show last night and can not really agree with the reviewer. The first act was not up to much. "Swinging" got old quickly - a twist in the tail but nothing startling. "Did you move?" showcased some terrific dancing but the context was laboured and cliched. pecially Craig Urbani's end of the pier characterisation.
"The Girl in The Yellow Dress" was the high point of the evening. Leigh Zimmerman was techinically great but lacks real charisma or sexual fire.
I believed the hype and expected to come out of the theatre on a high - but left feeling that I had seen a second rate "Fosse". The cast worked really hard but the vehicle for all their talent was not exciting enough.
I can see why this went down a storm with a certain type of New York audience - looking for "culture". A case of the emperors new clothes i think. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 24 Oct 02 |
  | I went to the show last night and for most of the first act was bored. The show is a fine example of technical dancing ability - but the vignettes are pretty much one note affairs, with the exception of Act Two at times. Some of the dancing is terrific but there are also awful moments provided by Gavin Lee and Craig Urbani in particular, and their end-of-the-pier characterisations. Leigh Zimmerman looked terrific and danced up a storm - but she is not magical or unfortunately sexty.

    | Bit of a fake as i only saw the PBS recording off US Tv, but without going into too much detail, this is not what you will be expecting. The three pieces are totally different and without links other than the theme of the 'lonely & desperate' making contact with others.
Don't want to say anything else but it really was great. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 28 Sep 02 |
