starstarstarstarstarParents struggling to cope with the demands of caring for a severely disabled child does not sound like the stuff of comedy. Yet, Peter Nichols unique and courageous comedy manages to be sensitive, intelligent and thought provoking whilst being one of the funniest plays around. Victoria Hamilton is brilliant as the mother. She almost manages to convince you her belief that her daughter will improve is not totally unfounded (even though common sense tells you it is). Eddie Izzard as the father is a simply inspired piece of casting. Prunella Scales is totally believeable as the mother-in-law whilst John Warnaby and Robin Weaver perfectly embody the enthusiastic (if clumsy) do-gooder and his queasy wife who simply cannot cope with disability (as embodied by young Sophie Bleasdale on the night I was there). All-in-all a supberb production. - USER: Whatsonstage.com04 Feb 02
starstarstarstarstarI went expecting to be disappointed as I had wanted to see Clive Owens as Bri, but I left feeling that Eddie Izzard had mad the part his own. The relationship between Izzard and Hamilton is convincing in this touching and ultimately heart-breaking in this dark comedy about the ways in which humans are damaged goods. - USER: Whatsonstage.com25 Jan 02
starstarstarstarEasily one of the best things I've seen on the West End for a long time. You could criticise Eddie Izzard and say that he's just shoehorned his comedy act into this role - but it's like the part was written for the man! The real star though is Victoria Hamilton. She is both hilarious and heart wrenching making this an utterly engrossing and inventive piece of theatre. - USER: Whatsonstage.com14 Dec 01
starstarstarstarAn intelligent, funny, moving production of an intelligent, funny, moving play. It's of its time, but there's nothing wrong with that - it still has plenty to say to us now. All the performances are particularly strong, but victoria Hamilton is outstanding. Her desperate vulnerability and fierce maternal love are heartbreaking to watch. Eddie Izzard does well as Bri, especially when he is given a chance to conect directly with the audience. It's a knowingly theatrical play in this respect - often most satisfying when the characters confide in us or go into darkly comic routines complicity with the characters. A special bouquet for the young actress playing Jo, the disabled child at the centre of the play. the actress 'on duty' the night I saw it gave an outstanding performance and it was all the more touching when she had her momneet outside the disability at the end of the first half. Don't miss this revival - the run is limited! (Judi Herman) - USER: Whatsonstage.com13 Dec 01
starstarstarstarWhat a fantastic piece of writing! Victoria Hamilton is compelling as the young mother and Eddie Izzard very funny- although he doesn't really have the depths for the darker moments- his performance is a little light weight. Nevertheless a great night out. - USER: Whatsonstage.com12 Dec 01
