Love Songs for a Timewaster is an interesting show, described by production company Glasgow Actors, as a play with songs. With no set, costume or props, it doesn’t feel like a play at all. It feels more like a folk music night, but once the cast (Iain Heggie, John Kielty, Mike Stewart and Charley McMonagle) get going, a clear storyline comes across in a series of songs and narration. Heggie on vocals leads the story and plays a man who, late in life, forms a relationship with a younger man. His voice is soft and his delivery straightforward, allowing the words to do the work. The younger man is played by Kielty on keyboard and vocals. He is exquisite and supports Heggie and the rest of the band brilliantly. Stewart on guitar and McMonagle on fiddle have smaller roles to play, but all four men blend together beautifully in an understated but intriguing entertainment. - Julie McNicholls
