A musical based upon the real life of Edinburgh’s William Brodie - a respected cabinet-maker, deacon of the trades guild and city councillor by day, and burglar by night - is an excellent idea. This new musical by Peter D Robinson and Carpe Diem Productions features some excellent singing and the production values for a Fringe show are high. Unfortunately opening night became an embarrassing affair as cast members forgot their lines and a serious case of stage fright threatened to take hold. Things did improve as the two hour show without interval went along, but more rehearsals and a pruning of the superfluous narration might have helped the delivery and pacing, not to mention people's memories. The plot may be confusing but at least the music is good, though I'm not sure it's presented at its best with the current orchestrations, which, combined with the venue make you feel like you're at a Sunday service instead of a musical. At least it makes for a more reflective evening at the Fringe. - Paul Ewing
