I have to say that I went to see Spamalot last weekend in Birmingham and was extremely disappointed. I am a huge fan of the west end show and saw it 3 times in london. However Bonnie Langford didn't shine in the role of Lady of the Lake, with lack lustre vocals and costume that looked more like the panto fairy. She just wasn't strong enough to make me care about the DIva's song. The set seems to restrict the amount of playing space so much the small cast seemed squashed, and it was dark so upstage that it wasn't worth having the band on stage. The brilliant way the Dark Knight is staked to the wall in the west end became an obvious trick in this production. The amount of cuts to this production mean that some of the little things that were so funny have been lost. For me what made the west end production so fabulous was the spectacle. All of which seem to be missing from the tour. I understand that for touring purposes shows need to be adaptable but I have seem some amazing touring productions (Miss Saigon, Starlight Express) that managed to bring the spectacle of the west end to regional theatre. If you are going to charge west end prices I expect to see more than a shell of the original production. Although I thought he supporting cast did rather well (they made the best of a bad job) My family and I were disappointed. - Rachel
