starstarstarstarstarEdward Snape for Fiery Angel Ltd & Tricycle London Productions Ltd in Association with West Yorkshire Playhouse present: John Buchan’s “The 39 Steps” adapted by Patrick Barlow Tuesday 4th May 2010, Birmingham Rep The story of Richard Hannay and the 39 Steps has been the subject of 3 motion pictures over the years and this humorous adaptation takes most of its lead from the earliest of those films which was directed by Alfred Hitchcock back in 1935. Upon entering the auditorium you are taken back to those days by the playing of dance band music. And we even heard part of the Paul Temple radio theme music “Coronation Scott” during the show. The entire cast of 4 that is 3 men and one woman play out the story of Richard Hannay accused of murder, the mysterious goings on in a large house in Scotland, his romantic entanglement and of the role played by the diminutive Mr Memory. Humour is the order of the day and as the cast recreates familiar scenes from the old black and white movie both the period background music and the props bring it all to life. In a show that moved at great pace the audience were enthralled and amused right from the beginning and it was a perfect comedy thriller for a Bank Holiday week. Dugald Bruce-Lockhart was well cast as Richard Hannay and looked the part being suave and debonair with a neat pencil moustache! Katherine Kingsley was every bit the glamorous and mysterious gal the play needed and in playing 3 roles was fully occupied. Richard Braine & Dan Starkey appeared to be never off stage and played so many roles that I had lost count by the end of Act One. The fact that one of them is tall and the other shorter added plenty of visual comedy but it was the sheer fun that they all were obviously having that transferred to the audience. Director Maria Aitken and designer Peter McKintosh have created a winning touring production and there is no doubting that tonight’s full house enjoyed every minute of the play. The running time is 1hr 45mins including one interval and is suitable for all the family. The show continues at Birmingham Rep until Sat May 8th, 2010 and all I can say is don’t miss it if you want a fun time. Quite priceless... - Clive Fuller04 May 10
