WOS Radio: Glen & Sharp Confront Ghosts at Q&A
Date: 11 March 2010

Theatregoers at our Whatsonstage.com Outing to Ghosts at the Duchess Theatre on Tuesday (9 March 2010) were treated to an exclusive post-show Q&A with stars Iain Glen (who also directs) and Lesley Sharp.

Glen marks his directorial debut with the play, which is adapted from Ibsen's 1881 original by Irish playwright Frank McGuinness.

Set in the Norwegian fjordland, the drama takes place in Mrs Alving’s country house, where she is preparing for the opening of an orphanage, a memorial to her late husband. Mrs Alving’s son Oswald, an artist, returns home for the celebrations. A story of love, betrayal and hypocrisy gradually unfolds as ghosts from the past come back to haunt the family.

Sharp plays Mrs Alving opposite Glen’s Pastor Manders in a cast that also features Harry Treadaway as Oswald, Malcolm Storry and Jessica Raine. The production is designed by Stephen Brimson Lewis.

Our lively Q&A examined the history of the project, the "emotive" language of McGuinness' translation, the play's contemporary resonances and Glen's Scottish (not Northern Irish!) accent. It was chaired by Whatsonstage.com deputy editor Theo Bosanquet, and can be heard by clicking the 'play' button below...

I am devastated that I will not have a chance to see this play. My husband and I planned our annual "trip across the pond" to coincide with its run. We have tickets for May 1, but because it is closing early on Match 27, it will be gone long before we get there. How we would have loved to have been there for the Q & A session the 9th. Thank you for the coverage and the pod cast of it. My husband and I are huge Iain Glen fans and have seen him on stage several times. We were actually fortunate to have been able to see him twice last year at Chichester in May in 'Wallenstein' and again in the fall in 'Separate Tables' (thanks to some very good transatlantic airfares.) We have never been disappointed by his performance. He always puts all of his heart and soul into every one. And it shows. We were doubly looking forward to seeing his directorial debut. So if you are fortunate enough to live there, go see this play. I promise, you will not be disappointed. My husband and I will just have to wait until another time when the very talented Mr. Glen appears on stage. - Michiel Cavuoti
