TheatreVoice: Royal Courting International Talent

Date: 18 September 2007

Whatsonstage.com Radio has teamed up with TheatreVoice.com to bring you expanded audio content. This time, Aleks Sierz talks to Elyse Dodgson, head of the Royal Court’s international department, about the theatre's upcoming International Playwrights season, which features foreign classics on the main stage as well as new overseas writers in the Upstairs studio.

Amongst the highlights of the new programme - encompassing plays from Germany, France, Romania, Switzerland, Sweden and Ukraine - are revivals of Eugene Ionesco’s Rhinoceros (opening 27 September, previews from 21 September) and Max Frisch’s The Arsonists (opening 6 November, previews from 1 November), which are performed in repertory by the same cast in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs (See News, 18 Sep 2007).

Meanwhile opening tonight (18 September 2007, previews from 13 September) in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs is German Marius von Mayenburg’s The Ugly One opens tonight, a “scalpel sharp” comedy on beauty, identity and getting ahead in life. It continues until 13 October and is followed by Gianina Carbunariu’s Kebab (19 October to 3 November), Anupama Chandresekhar’s Free Outgoing (8 to 24 November) and a doube bill of Joakim Pirinen’s The Good Family and Natalia Vorozhbit’s The Kohmenko Family Chronicle (30 November to 21 December).
